GPX 250 tank....:(

Postby GPX 250 box » Sat Dec 06, 2008 4:57 pm

Hello, my name is Lukas and I am new to the site.
Looks like a good site with heaps of info.
I have just picked up a GPX 250 1991. Thought I would pull it down and give it a clean up. I had a few problems with it running rough. Found the tank had a bit of rust in it and the fuel tap just looked shocking. I bought a new fuel tap and a tank cleaning and repair/lining kit. Got on to doing the job today and when I was high pressure washing the tank form the inside to prepare it for the chemical etching (rust killing) I noticed a small pin hole on the side of the tank. It rusted through. Since then I have found out that GPX’s have a huge problem with tanks rusting out.

My question is does anyone have a tank for sale? And has anyone repaired a tank with this amount of damage? Kawasaki want about $950 for a new tank. The local wreckers want about $450 second hand. I live in Melbourne.
Thanks guys.

Try Independant MC wreckers in Toowoomba. I reckon a tank would be way less than $200 from them. 0746321848. :)
2 X ZRX1200R 4 X ER6N, GT550, 1988 ZX-10, 4 X GPZ250R, 4 X GPZ900R and GPZ750R :) Yeah I like Kawasakis.

Hey, welcome aboard Lukas. I don't know what they'd charge for a tank, but Vic Motorcycle Wreckers in Heidelberg have a heap of stuff for GPX250s (which is kind of depressing, when I think about it - lots of broken L plates), and seem pretty good price-wise.

Mate where are ya ?, Easy fix to weld up a few pin holes. Or even "2 part liquid metal" will seal it up no worries. All tanks rust out btw it's not model specific.
