Speedo cable fell off

Postby corvus2606 » Mon Nov 17, 2008 4:11 pm

I was riding my GPX250 to wakefield on friday arvo and got as far as tarago, when i checked my speed, was sitting happily on 80(Ls), turned a corner, then looked again to find my speedo sitting at 0, not good, pulled up to have a look, everything looked in order, admittedly, i didnt quite know where to look being new to bikes, but i didnt see any loose cables(turns out it was still sitting there, but the thread was just hanging on.)

made it to wakefield by praying not to run into the fuzz. got there to find what was left of the cable trailing, and worn down by ~30km of dragging.

so, needed a new one before riding home, goulburn, yass, and Canberra motorcycles had nothing. ended up getting one from joes.

Im told this is a fairly common thing, If it is, then why does no one stock replacements?

and its obviously designed for small handed japanese people to work on, i almost had to remove the fairing just to screw the replacement back in, would have had to aswell, if it wasnt for a kindly small handed man who did it for me.

Whingers ;) Not even an insurance claim in either story  Now get back out there this weekend & do some Damage to the Scenery .......... Blackies count. 8)

Corvy they work loose fairly regualary, well more often then they break. Reason being the small hand delima as you found. Toss some anti seize around it 7 lean on it with a set of multi grips. wont happen again mate.

Hey Mal how amny k's till the FP shat itself ?. I watched Mick Dundee ride out on his C model this am & thought .... "Phuk I Miss Tiggr". Drizzled rain here all day, No way i was getting the "Crim" out from under the Covers to fill my undies in city traffic. :( . Woulda been a nice day on Tigg'.

This happened to me on my GPX too... Was coming down a nice twistie hill with some friends and all of a sudden the speedo went to 0. Pulled over, had a look but couldnt quite get it tightened enuf, so continued on using other ppls speed as a judge, and got a mate who was good with gippys to fix it at the next stop.
Fortunately mine didnt grad along the road.... sucky that it was hard to get a replacement, but yeah, maybe it is a somewhat common issue with the bikes.

Just to back up whats already been stated:
Yes this is a common occurence. In three years it's happened three times to me. And two of those times resulted in having to replace the cable.
One tip that may help in relation to the cable wearing and snapping might be to try to set the cable up such that it does not bend too sharply at any point . A sharp bend will mean the cable is flexing more as it is spinning. Still, not so easy to do. Just a thought.
