2000 ZX9 - Any Ideas ?

Hi,

I have a 2000 ZX9r which has served me well over the past couple of years (I travel around 1000Km's per week - and the bike has now got 145,000Kms on it) Anyway - it has really never given me any trouble until just recently. The bike has started playing up when I first start riding in the morning or on the way home (after sitting for the day). It will start fine , Idle get up to temp , even rev without hesitation in the garage - however once you start riding it sounds like it goes to about 3 cylinders and almost like it runs out of fuel. - The 9 will then stop, I restart and its away as happy as anything!

One place I took it to suggested it might be the CDI and to replace it (which I have done - didn't work) I have also replaced the Junction box. - To me it sounds electrical but I am really at a loss to know where to even begin to look - so I am asking if anyone has any suggestions or any ideas on what this might be!!!!

Check fuel tap / vac line first. Vac line perishes - common.

Next try the float bowl drains on the carbs as you may have injested crap / water.

I had similar problems on my 1998 model(s).
In both cases they needed new coils - the coils were within spec, but slightly off perfect.
New coils fixed it right up.

Could just be something as simple (well unitl you try to FIND it) as a corroded connector or a wire either broken by pulling apart from the wires, or rubbing from a tank and such, not badly broken enough (or rubbed through enough) to actually BREAK, but just enough to create an intermittent short.
Not fun.
If it was mine I would pull all the bodywork and tank off and go over everything visually, pull all the connectors apart, check ALL the earths and make sure there is no corrosion on them too.
If you do all this and it is still there, then yep get another bike the same and swap (one at a time obviously) resistors and regulators and coils (but coils normally GO, not intermittent) and see if your mates 9 has the mystery gremilin instead of you.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I agree it would be great to be able to swap parts over - just dont know anyone else with a 9! Just to complicate things - the problem does not seem to be intermittent as it dies in almost exactly the same place every day! - did I mention I hate electric problems!!!!!!!!!!!!

Do you also loose a couple of hours from your memory ?? Sounds likes Aliens to me.
I didnt not that in the original post. Could you a bit more specific, is it just in the morning for instance?
Sometimes ,especially if you have a LOT of keys on your ring , then the ignition can also get a bit "iffy". Play and corrosion in the contacts can cause all sorts of problems there. Squirting WD40 down it seems to work for a while but is not a permanent fix.

It is a very strange thing for sure!!!!! - this basicly always happens when it is first run for the day - or after it has sat for a number of hours. (eg ride to work and ride home) - dosnt seem to matter what time of the day or what temperature it is either.
Only the one key on the key ring.
