zx12r fuel economy

Postby 98ninja » Wed May 28, 2008 1:36 pm

what kind of mileage should i get out of a full tank?
just making it to 210kms lately.
commuting seems to chug more petrol than faster riding.

..feck that IS bad...

I can ride to PI and back (roundtrip of 290km approx)
and stick 17 litres back in to fill it

around town..I get 250-260 before the fuel gauge block blinks

oh
and I am running a smaller front sprocket..so I expect my fuel usage to be higher
than a standard bike ..so no complaints from me

what year?
mines a 2000
its had a full service 1500kms ago and they didnt say anything was wrong with it.
althought the bastard who sold it to me was dodgey as hell.
also do you take notice of the fuel gauge?
maybe its an over sensitive fuel gauge

How many litres you putting in at 210km's? If its 17 then its using heaps of fuel just for about town. If your only throwing in 14 or so then yeah the fuel guage is overly sensitive I guess! What octane you using?

the fuel guages on bikes are so so so so so conservative.... i have an 18L tank that shows empty at 6L left!!!! thats showing me 2/3 of my range....

put 14L in my widdle too fiddy at 330kays last night.... 8) i put 98 in it for the first time too so ill see how the fuel consumption goes.... having said that ill fry the fuel consumption figures on the putty run on friday 8)

Ive gone back to 91 octane on the little twofiddy... Dealer reckons 98 "may" cause it to ping... In the US they recommend 87 octane so Id say stick with the 91 on them??? Anyway tell us how u go on the 98 but it will be negligable difference I bet ;)

interesting.... the tank before the on im now on i used 95... i think i got a little better mileage...i mainly put 98 in cos the 91 octane at bpp has 10% ethanol in it and i didnt wanna use that so i thought id see how the 98 went on mileage...

given its only a 30hp engine im not sure 98 would give u much of a different feeling to the engine...

i will usually stick to 91 tho due to the bank balance haha

when you say 'just making it', what do you mean ? Is this when the last block starts to blink on the fuel guage ? If so, you should have at least another 40-50km range left, which would see you get about 260k's with your style of riding.

Smitty I don't know how the fuck you manage to get such incredible mileage out of your 12. No other 12 rider I know can get anywhere near 290km out of a stock tank, and still not fill it up fully !!! I am not taking the piss either mate, I just cannot believe that sort of mileage figures.......they are incredible. That is a fuel consumption rate of better than 15km per litre !!!!

98ninja - I have an '05 ZX12R, that will get to about 220km before the last block starts to flash. I could squeeze another 40km out of it after that point, and always throw about 17 or 18 litres on board. Thats for normal commuting, with the occasional squirt ;) . On the highway its marginally better..........but if I start giving it the berries, then lucky to make 200km out of a tank before the blink starts....I also have a 15 tooth front sprocket for quicker acceleration....

Most of the guys on the (now defunct) Oz zx12r forum used to get similiar mileage to mine. It always varied between 220-240km before the blinking...

No-one got anything like 290km out of a tank !!! thats just amazing........

That's usually the other way around Rob, with low octane fuel you'll get pre-ignition detonation or pinging. I'd be *very* surprised to learn that the inverse is also true.

Gos how many times have I been to PI with the 12 now...6..maybe 8 times?
and its been pretty much the same each time . I fill at the servo just around the corner
from home and off I trot to the Island ...and just before I get home, the block starts
blinking and there is the servo...roll in and fill it, always the same, 17 or 17 and a bit
litres to fill it

12R tanks takes 20 and the gauge block is flashing with 3 litres left..so that sez the
gauge is pretty accurate

I know the PI run is mainly freeway so maybe the unchanging throttle setting gives
this fuel consumption result..who knows

cheers
