Zx2r - head gasket

Postby h8_rice » Wed Apr 16, 2008 12:23 am

Okay guys, Iv stripped the bike down to its jocks.
Im going to replace the head gasket, I have it all apart ready to get at the thing, just a few questions to anyone who has done this.

does 3hrs sound reasonable for a mechanic to pull it down from this stage (no radiator, exhaust etc - just carbies and top end to pull apart) Id say that should include replacing it as well !!.
I would attempt this myself, but I am what some might call "partially'slightly retarded"

On the dirty old 308 it was a peice of piss but I have no idea what I am doing when it comes overhead cams and all this timing shit.
And even worse. when it comes to bolting it all back in !
I also dont have the "Special Tools" it lists in the manual.

While I am at it I want the valve clearances checked, whats the average price for this sort of thing, I havnt figured out if I am being dry raped by the mechanic yet as I have no experience with bike mechanics to fall back on.
Iv just had the carbies rebuilt, synched etc and plugs changed (cause I could not be bothered at that point), and a few other things and the 3hrs labour stung me 72 an hour !! shite.
Anyone got a mechanic they trust who can sort this out for me for minimal bullshit, or cost?
cheers anyone who can help

Question 1........WTF are you ? ( I know a great cheap mechanic.......BUT he's in the UK  )

Question 2........ Why not check the valves BEFORE the head gasket ?
I don't suffer from insanity; I enjoy every minute of it.

LOL I realised I forgot to mention where I was at about 3am this morning oops..
Im in south east QLD,

And.. well Id assume once the head gasket has been done you can do valves afterwards anyway? its just that it seems to be a combustion leak into the cooling system.

I got all my fairing the other day, Top, 2 x sides, tinted screen, bracket, air ducts, headlight, all for 500 bucks! swoit, needs a tidy up and a paint (hot pink/purple) lol
