Rexess!

Postby Strika » Fri Feb 22, 2008 7:43 pm

Well, someone apropriately dubbed the new ZRX1200S a "Rexess"!! So I gues it's sticking. I'm happy with that, as at least I am riding a girl!

I took the Silver Dream racer out for a 350 klm shakedown this arvo in preparation for the supers run. At a consistent 5000-6000rpm it managed 18 kilometres to the litre or roughly 5.4 litres / 100klms. Theoretically I could run it for 340-350 klms before needing fuel. I think the Supers ride may not prove as frugal however!!!!!

Passing traffic was a twist and go affair with no requirement to change down unless it drops out of it's power band (1800 rpm - 10,000rpm)

I managed to scrub the tyres edge to edge but nothing has touched down yet. However, I took the opportunity just now, to reverse the eccentric adjusters to raise the rear ride height and also I tightened the chain a touch to make sure it was right for the trip. It is quite a noticeable difference in ride height, lifting my once bent knees and feet flat on the ground to straight legs and flat feet. I reckon it's prolly a good 30 mm difference! It might be a touch flighty taking it from that sharp 25 degrees to 24 degrees!!! But it was really lazy prior to that so it won't hurt.

The seat gave me grief after about the first 80 klms, but then it kinda came good for the rest of the trip! :? I have the sheepskin on it already.

I also fitted the PDA mount and box. It sits neatly out of the way in a far easier to read position than the Beemer afforded. I just have to turn the bars to the right to fill up!! :)

I had a little fiddle with the preload on the rear and the rebound. I firmed up both which seamed to work OK. I will need a few more miles to get it totally sussed, by then I should have a set of shocks coming!!!

I have also emailed Hepco and Becker to get an idea of price and availability on a full hard luggage set-up for it. Unfortunately I reckon I'm not going to get much change out of 1500!!!

The trick is to have more padding in your arse cheeks by eating more cutlets ;) . Well thats my trick  .

Anyway looks great and im sure you will enjoy "Rexess" as much as I am enjoying "NOT ANOTHER BLOODY BIKE" as named by my wife when I said I wanted a ZRX. I think she is considering a change of name after she had a go on the back.

If you can wait we should consider a group buy on the shocks.

I am more likely to go down the WP route or something else rather than Ohlins mate! So go your hardest..unless you wanna do a WP group buy and be different to Phil!

The Rexess proudly held up the tradition this morning by either leading the pack or being bloody difficult to pass!!! It's no ZX9, but I'm sure by the end of the supers trip I'll have some sort of handle on how to stop it and turn it! It gave me a few frights today as I am still unsure what each of the movements underneath me mean yet. It takes a few klms to get it sussed. I reckon the run up from Bega behind Phil might do the trick!!

Yeah, I had it all arse about to start with. ran it in like I was on the 9. After two brief introductions to the school of the run wide, I started taking the entries a tad slower and rolling out those fat farking dollops of torque!!! Top gear even in the hairpins!

But the suspenders feel a bit odd. The back is actually OK at this point. However I am sure as I get to know it I will find it's limitations soon enough. But the front was more of an issue. It wasn't dangerous and at normal pace it felt OK. But once I started having dip the front would collapse!! I just wound a tad more preload into it and it is holding it up a little better, but once Trevor Manly's injuries heal I think it might be off to him for some work. Might even see about the internals in the std KYB's! If the internals are half decent, I'll just have them re sprung and re valved. Save the cost of a set of WP's too.

I am sure once I get amongst you lot Phil, I will start finding it's shortcomings. It's all part of the fun of learning and setting up a new bike! 8)
