How much profit?

The good wife and I are looking for a second car. At the moment we have our eye on an ex-demo Toyota Kluger. However, the price isn't really that much different from a new one.

Any one know what sort of profit car dealers make on new cars? I don't want to pay the RRP, but at the same time, I don't want to insult the dealer with an offer that wont help to feed his family!

Usually there is a bit in them, and they get a rebate from the Manufacturer. Almost all dealers are a franchise opperation, hence they buy cars from their brand. The manufacturers offer rebates for demo's and they also have their margings. Go for the jugular, then make him work out the $$ untill you are happy. Keep in mind also the longer they have had it on the lot the more it costs them. Most demos arn't on the lot for that long. They pay intrest on stock.

Depends on how many Ks, exact condition (demos can get thrashed), if it's the current year/model and wether you get put down as 1st or second owner. All of the above can adversly affect the resale value and spending the extra couple of grand now may save you more in the future.

Most demo's around here seem to get discounted $2-7k depending on mileage and of course, what it is to start with. Just remember they get to write off some of the loss...

As far as not insulting them, I reckon they're pretty thick skinned. The more they carry on, often the closer you are to the mark :lol: Remember, real estate agents, car salesman, lawyers, these are the demons you must slay to have a happy, peaceful life... :lol:

Why don't sharks eat real estate/car salesmen/lawyers ? Professional courtesy. :twisted:

Sorry mate...but a few things in here are not quite correct. Available dealer margins vary from not only brand to brand, but also model to model. A slow moving model can sometimes be offered with a factory bonus, sometimes not. Sometimes it is totally funded by the dealer sometimes by both the dealer and the Manufacturer or Distributor. Not all manufacturers or Distributors will offer the dealer a rebate. All New vehicle dealerships are franchise arrangement and all new vehicle dealerships must buy there new product from said Man/Dist. Not all dealerships finance all or some of there stock. Some actually own it! Others do a variety of funding methods from fully owned to 50/50 to 100%! It's not quite as simple as some would like to make out! 8)

Unfortunately, most people don't attend a car buying training course, like most sales people do to sell them. Therefore, it is perhaps a little irrational to expect them to have manors or extend common courtesy to sales staff. One thing I have noticed as an industry insider, is that fuckwits usually don't get the best deals! Pleasant and courteous clients, who know what they want and are comfortable negotiating are usually the ones who end up being looked after! Just ask yourself this question...who are you more likely to look after. A right fuckwit who is rude to you or someone who shows you some respect and exhibits common courtesy??? I know who got the best deals from me and most are still close friends today! 8)

Yeah, it's the ones who confuse the salesman, agree on a price with extras, then confuse the salesman some more and get him to write a price a thousand less than the price they just agreed upon on the contract. :D

Yeah everything you said. But reverse it :lol:

The guy that sold me the Ranger actually had the decency not to waste my time with crappy bickering over a couple of dollars here and there, threw me the keys within 5 minutes of me asking about it, rang me back when he said he would, asked what it would take to get a sale, and then delivered on it.

Unlike the guy from the local Toyota place, who failed to answer any questions about, you know, fiddly stuff, like the price of a Hilux...tray...towbar...details most people would expect when looking at a new car. Then when told the deal I was offered said "Well if you can get that then you best jump at it!" Word for word that one! Likewise, when looking at the Holden shop at the Rodeo's...talked to the salesman, let him look over my car for a valuation...left my name and number and all the usual guffaw...waited...waited...2 days later I had to rang him - to be given a change over that was genuinely insulting to my intelligence!

Yep, that dealer training is tops! :lol:

It's just over the road from my work, mate. A good mate walked away with a VZ acclaim with 34000km on the clock for $12k. Go to 3 of them, get a feel for it, set a sky price limit and then bid away!

Besides, just purchased a new Kluger... they don't have them at the auctions. :)
