AUSSIE actor Heath Ledger has been found dead at a downtown Manhattan residence in a suspected drug overdose, a New York Police Department spokesman says.

Ledger was found dead in his bed in one of his residences in Soho by his housekeeper at 3.35pm New York time (7.35am) today.

The 28-year-old one-time Oscar nominee has a two-year-old daughter with former fiancee Michelle Williams. He was set to play the Joker in the upcoming Batman film The Dark Knight.

A police spokesman said Ledger had an appointment for a massage at the apartment that is believed to be his home.

The housekeeper went to tell Ledger the masseuse had arrived and found him dead.

US television network NBC reports his body was found surrounded by pills.

"We are investigating the possibility of an overdose," Browne said.

Ledger and Williams split in September last year.

I heard he was pretty sick with pneumonia and was having a bugger of a time getting 2 hours sleep each night, I figure as it was the us equivalent of stillnox he was likely killed by he was having some sleeping problems.

It's a shame, a real shame, one of those guys that had the world at his fingertips, especially as he didn't give about anything but being the best he could be as an actor.
