ooh...tuff game that
unless you specialise

most players (big like Bunnings or small like Tile Importers) already have buyers
running around Europe, China and SE Asia buying....timber tiles aluminium granite (real and pretend)
or get stuff made here (like concrete stepping stones etc or plastic plumbing) coz its silly to
try and ship it far (like insulation bats) or you must get stuff to AS (plumbing bits are a good example)

what sorta building material do you have in mind?

You want advice ?
Do a realistic business plan.......that should stop you in your tracks :D

Lemme tell you how it goes.......6am start 9pm back home, then answer all the messages that have been left during the day.......figure out 1 or 2 are serious enough to get back in the van to go and sort out.....Home for around 11pm.........sit down, bite to eat and then into the paperwork....invoicing, quotes, pricing, tax, GST, super etc. etc.
Bed by 3am and back up at 6am to start it all over again.
No sick pay.......No holiday pay. Stress over non payers, chase until court only to find out they have declared themselves insolvent......kiss goodbye to the money including the amount you paid for materials.

Self employment ........ what a wonderful life
Bloody best thing I did was to give it all up, immigrate to Aus and go to work for a company
I don't suffer from insanity; I enjoy every minute of it.

Everyone will tell you that your foolish, make you feel like you are making a mistake and fill you with doubt.
If you believe in your idea and have faith in your own abilities then by all means charge ahead mate.
The reason so many smart people with very good abilities and skills are employee's is because they question themselves and are scared of stepping outside of their comfort zone. Believe in yourself and you will do well. As Rossi said prepare a business plan and be sure you can tick all the boxes.

Hey HP long time no see! Don't listen to the Doomsdayers and the Neysayers mate! Tell em all to get fucked!!! I admire anyone who is all for having a crack!

I have started, built up, sold and run 6 companies of my own since 1992! I would be happy to help you with some background info. Let's have a chat face to face when you have time and go from there! Don't worry you're idea is safe with me, I have enough on my plate!!! What you do is almost as important as how you structure the company. What you want do do with it in the future is somewhat determined by this and must be looked at closely. What you want to import needs also to be looked at in terms of market size, distribution and sales methods, retail or wholesale basis? Current suppliers, product compliance etc.,

I am back in Melbourne Thursday night HP, if you still have my mobile number call me friday so we can have a chat or PM me yours and I'll call you Friday/Sat sometime! 8)

Marty,
NO one on here is being doom & gloom ....just trying to point out the need for a "realistic" business plan so he knows what he is letting himself in for ;)
I had a ball whilst building my co but it's a lot harder than many think

Guilty concience Rossi???? I can't recall singling you out??? :? I agree with you however, a realistic business plan is of the utmost importance. Many people with a good idea don't do the research before kick off and pay for it in the long run.

As for why 6 companies in that time? What? Never heard of Profit? :?

For the record Rossi, my original company is still going strong! Since 1992 to be precise. The others were for a purpose at the time and were sold. Some to staff, some to other business people. One, which I had a partner in who went down with another business was shut down and it's work carried on by my existing company. So I am really at a loss as to how you could make comment about my ability to stick at something I start? :?

Sorry if I caused you offence mate.........I just thought 6 companies in a 10 Yr period was a bit strange.......took me a good couple of years before mine showed a decent profit and no one in their right mind woulda bought off of me before then ;)
