Ummm yeh it is a shocker! Heres the story according to witnesses (Cause I can barely remember any of that day at all...the accident not at all). Its mostly a cut and paste from another bike forum where I put a post up to raise awareness of back protectors...so sorry about the names...they don't mean anything here really but you'll get the picture.

"On Sun 11th of November I was involved in a serious motorcycle accident on old north road, Huapai. I can't remember the actual accident but have been informed on what occurred by various witnesses including Barbender who was traveling behind me at the time.

I rode around a blind corner to discover a car parked 3/4 on the road and a pedestrian (the driver out of the car) on the road returning to the car in the other lane. I apparently tried to avoid the pedestrian and in doing so took a handful of brakes and the bike proceeded to perform a textbook stoppie...until it carried on with the stoppie. I went over the bars and landed on the road, skidded under the car up to my shoulders. My bike carried on cartwheeling off the road coming to a rest 50 mtrs down the road in the ditch.

My injuries include:
x3 breaks in my jaw
x2 breaks in my back (T9 and T7...both stable)
x4 broken Ribs
x1 broken shoulder blade
x1 punctured lung
Broken tail bone
Trauma to my Arse (big gash...possibly from the tow bar of the car  )

Barbender came round the corner to see my bike flying through the air but couldn't see me. He finally saw me under the car and began screaming my name hoping for an answer. For 1 1/2 minutes he was in Hell...he was sure I was dead as there was no sign of life. Eventually I came to and started complaining about feeling weird. He removed the car from on top of me (if you have met Barbender you will know what I mean) and when the ambulance arrive they removed my leathers.

"You can imagine my relief when I saw you were wearing a back protector!" is what Barbender told me in hospital. I have two compression fractures in my back now and on inspection of my back protector you can see the impact marks where it has saved my life...or at the very least kept me walking.

I'm certain that if I was not wearing this back protector that I would not be here writing this now...it has saved my life and a whole lot of grief for the people I love.

I believe 100% that back protectors are not an "optional" extra when it comes to riding motorcycles, I believe they are easily equally important as a helmet.

I have made a decision to never ride with anyone else ever again who is not wearing one as I don't want to go through the grief of pulling my mate out from under a car to find out they are dead because they couldn't be bothered/thought they couldn't afford proper protection. If you haven't got a back protector that you wear ON EVERY RIDE go down to Mt Eden Motorcycles and talk to Mark (Wiggles) and ask for the Biggles08 back protector sale and get one.... They have agreed to run a promotion for me to try to raise awareness of this important issue.it will probably save your life one day!"

The police that attended the accident believe that the car driver/parker was at fault but there is insufficient evidence to lay charges. Apparently there is no law to cover this type of accident as the driver was not in the vehicle at the time of the accident. All the witnesses agree that I was not speeding or riding dangerously and that I was not at fault. The serious crash unit attended the site and they had the standard answer of "all drivers should be able to stop in half the distance that can be seen." and hence by default the responsibility lies with me. The Policeman who attended the scene disagrees with this and won't be laying charges against me. He is still trying to find some way to charge the other driver as he believes he is genuinely at fault regardless of what the SCU findings were. He is a fantastic cop who understands reality (Quick_stix take note!)

Good post Biggles, and I couldn't agree more about back protectors. I was in a pretty serious accident in April 2005 and ended up being air-lifted to hospital because of soft tissue damage to my spine (they suspected it was worse). I firmly believe that if I had been wearing a back protector at the time I probably would have walked away (been pillioned home) instead of airlifted. Needless to say I went out and bought one the week after I was released from horsepiddle and haven't ridden without one since. About 12 months ago I was (un)lucky enough to have my RJays back protector stolen, and bought a Dianese Wave12 to replace it - man what a fantastic piece of kit that is.

Heal well dude.

Jeez biggles - I sympathise with recovering from those injuries.
Take it easy and rest up - don't expect miracles with the recovery - those sort of injuries take time.

Its hardcase actually, one of the witnesses driving the other way who saw the accident is so pissed off that the other driver is not being charged he's writing a submission to the cops with diagrams and everything....the cop told me this! What a good cop and a good witness! :D

I went for a test ride on a 05 zx6rr today. First ride since my accident. It was great to get back on a bike again. As for the bike, not right for me, it had been thrashed as a racebike and put back on the road. I've got my eyes firmly on a 04 zx636r or zxr6 636 or zxr636 however you write it, in a nice shade of green and all going well will need to drive a couple of hours south and pick it up for an hours ride home (while the better half drives the car home)...watch this space, a new toy to be purchased shortly :D
