Fair enough if its some unknown brand test should be required but a known top of the range spec lid no way its already proved itself in many races around the world.

Your right....what you said is BS all the way! Australian retailers have no say in it! Nor did they instigate or initiate the implementation of the Australian Standards requirement for Helmets. Importers have more costs associated with having to have X number of helmets from each batch destroyed in testing to prove compliance, so therefore they have to pass these associated costs onto the retailer. So the retailer makes no more money, and often less to keep prices affordable. Most bike shops operate on less than a 30% mark up for accessories. Try convincing Myer to run at those margins??? They wouldn't get out of bed for less than 100% mark up!!! The australian market place is small in terms of the mototcycle market, hence the lack of ability to buy in bulk and save costs.

The reason they have such stanards in Australia, is to assist people just like you in not buying a helmet which is a token gesture in terms of safety! If no Australian standards existed, unscrupulous importers could import and sell cheap helmets which don't comply to any safety standard and could perhaps be useless in terms of a crash! I know a few jewellers who have trouble recognising a knock off Tag Huer, so an AGV Titech wouldn't be too much of an issue for the XXXXXXXX to knock up!

I hope this somewhat explains the reasons why, and can in some way placate your very obvious disdain for AS1698!

Fair enough but why can't DOT, SNELL and Australian Standard be accepted world wide why do we need testing from the same manufactures that already have tested there own product to apply with higher standards than ours? Like i said cheap no brand names YES they should be covered under one of the three major standards, and if u buy a lid from ebay of a non authourised dealer then your stiff shit if its a knock off or fake. Do u honestly believe my DOT standard helmet is any less safe than an Australian standard spec? Do WSB and Motogp change helmets according to what country they are in to abide by the standards.

ahhh but racing is governed by a different set of rules anyway.... they have to meet FIM (or whatever the federation of bike racing is) rules/standards...

The facts are your Snell/DOT standard helmet is more likely tested to a higher standard than the Aus standard. I kow Snell pushbike helmets are raved about in the industry as the best. The reality is the helmet is ILLEGAL in Australia, simple as that. You can ride in it and if pulled over by a copper you'd be pretty stiff to get pinged on it I reckon as personally speaking no copper has EVER checked my helmet had a compliant sticker on it.. your problem comes if you have a bingle in it, then once they see a non aus standard helmet your insurance is worth SFA.

i was told if u wear a helmet even if its sold in Australia, but doesn't have the Aust standard sticker, so even if u buy one and pull teh sticker off, its the same as Not wearing a helmet! same if u wear a helmet and don't have the strap done up, same deal! Not wearing a helmet!

WTF would u wear it strapped up tho! even if u didn't have to wear a helmet! i would still wear one just for hte comfort factor! of not having wind in my face!
