The Beemer Saga!

Postby Strika » Thu May 31, 2007 5:51 pm

Neka was right...I shoulda bought a GTR!! True to their word, Motohansa started on my bike yesterday. I recieved a call this afternoon to advise me of the damage report!!! I was in a meeting at the time and called back with great speed and a good lot of angst!

The voice on the other end of the phone didn't sound all that confident.......he had me worried actually, thinking maybe it was more than a spline or a gearbox!! I think he was just worried as he may have thought I didn't know what to expect cost wise, thankfully my Beemer mechanic mate in Sydney had prepped me for the costings. So when the guy from Motohansa finally spat it out....I was actually relieved! It went something like this...........
''Err....hi, what do you intend doing with this R1100??? Is it a keeper or are you intending getting rid of it???? (this alone filled me with dread) "

I sorta forced him to spit it out with some subtle words like..."can we get on with this mate!''

He did and said "OK, I'll just spit it out...your gearbox is stuffed, and I mean really stuffed, with bits everywhere" ... (I was waiting for the AND, but it didn't come!) He then continued on..."The good news is everything else appears really mint! all the seals, bearings and bushes are all good and the motor is as healthy as an ox........you have a choice.......2nd hand which we can have done for @$1500, or one of our own reconditioned gearboxes which all have undercut gears and are a little better set up than even an original new BMW one for $2500 all done."

Naturally I opted for the 2nd option as the intention (yeah heard this before) is to keep the old Beemer for a little while! It may be eligible for classic rego by the end!

So, the next question was when could they have it done? I was thinking here we go....the intended 18 June pick up might not happen. Well my jaw near dropped when he said he could have it ready tomorrow

These guys have been pretty damn professional so far as well as fast and things have been done as promised. So although I am unhappy about spending money on anything, they are making the experience a little more bearable

I may fly up on Wednesday 6th to pick it up and ride it back to Melbourne, as it would make the next block of travel and work during June much simpler and easier! :D

They are a unit box Mick! Like early triumphs and Harleys! They are a bolt to the back of the donk job! So it literally is a unbolt the old one and bolt in the new one job! :D Easy. But I am getting them to do the endfloat, clearances and balance the throttle bodies too as well as put a new clutch plate in while they have it apart.

Mate, If I wanted a 10, I would have just bought one. I am not selling the 9 and that has enough sporting potential for me on the road. for the track I have my little ZX6 still so I don't need a track bike. I bought the Beemer, for the "my back can't take it any more trips!" So I don't really need nor want a 10. Not that there is anything wrong with owning a 10! Just don't judge 10 riders by Glen and MickC! They are really poor examples!

Nah mate, us 10 riders are made of sterner stuff and aren't so easily fired up....and anyway, I've been a bad example all my life, may as well be a poor one too

Only time i'd be in strife Gos, is if they ran the Hi-Vis Vest challenge along the Hume!!!! I've seen the odd walloper peddle an RT up a spur rd faster than should be possible, so I reckon the more "Sports" orientated AAAARRRRRGGGGHHHH1100ARSE should be Ok providing there are some corners to negotiate.

I dunno why BMW hasn't worked out how to produce a diesel Boxer! I mean, they really couldn't make the acceleration (yeah yeah..it's poetic licence  ) any less inspiring. A diesel option might be just the ticket to tackle the Hi-Vis Vest challenge!!!! Naturally it would have to be Hi pressure direct injection intercooled turbo charged diesel. Mathematically if BMW can get 160kw from a 3 litre turbo diesel, they should by rights at least be able to get 60kw from an 1200cc turbo diesel!!!!! Now that's about as much power as my petrol 1100 boxer motor has now!!! And just imagine how tall you could gear it with all that torque being produced!!!!!

And Mick, when I say poor, I am not referring to your financial situation after you purchased that money pit 650 either!!!!! It is another word for bad, crap, shit, fucked, hopeless and useless. Oh, and it's no reflection on those mad ZX10 sports bikes either! They don't get to choose who rides em! But from what I hear, they spit off the ones they don't like!!! Has that happened to you Mick???? Glen??????

Hey I resemble that remark. At $2500 for your Gearbox old son I'm tipping we're not as poor as you at the moment :P :D :D

Pisser about the Gearbox though mate. Bloody sensational that they'll have the thing done in a day though.

Thankfully no.

Maybe one day when both of your testicles descend you'll get to ride one :P :P :P

650 a money pit? I've spent less on the whole bike than you have on your gearbox mate ;)

...and I know I'm a shit rider, and yes the Crim was sick of me being a pussy and spat me off once. At least I don't feel the need to setup one-sided riding challenges with 12 riders that I know I'm going to win
