Well your lucky you had that option. I was quoted $85+ to get one 2nd hand with nada warranty. so looked into the DIY thing as a serious option.

Mick C wrote:Bloody!!!!!! I'd been a naughty boy and had a blat up and down my street...noticed it seemed to bog down a bit and thought I'd check the timing now I had my timing light working again. Check it all and it looks sweet...then I notice the smoke pouring out from under the battery!!!!!! The dodgy rectifier decided to lunch itself and start to melt as fast as it possibly could with a lovely fizzing sound. Luckily it happened in the garage with the seat up so I could disconnect the battery asap and stop the burn before any flames started.

So there goes any chance of rego in the near future cos I'll be trying to source a new rectifier....and the B1 (and C1) had a different one to all the other 650's so they aren't too easy to get a hold of. I was hoping this was something I could replace down the line a bit. There are a few places though, but they are a bit pricey.

BLOODY !!! It might be a good idea to simply upgrade the entire electrical system ? I have a few alternators  and the 750 stuff should bolt right up (including the rotor) - stand by for an inspection report from the 4th dimension (I can walk to both ends of the shed now   )

While you were doing that walk, did you happen to see any shockies? or are you still panning through the bike parts for them?

Here's a quick pic of the damage...nicely toasted, and it's the one of the three that I had previously tested and found not working.

I had to tie a rope around my waste, when i poked my head in there on the supers Dooper Blooper Sleepover. I got out alive but the 4th dimension sucked my very small amount of riding ability ALL away. But knowings it's morph capability I'm sure Troy Bayliss has been in there & taken out a couple of Skill withdrawals.

Well I finally got the replacement rectifier from the states, popped it in and it seems to be working nicely. The only possible problem is that all the extra voltage is kind of highlighting the regulator is probably not quite up to the job, so I'll have to keep an eye on it.

This gave me the opportunity to finally take it out for a bit of a test run last night. Good news, the brakes work better than I expected, it actually seems to handle OK, new tyres feel good, headlight and indicators work fine.

Bad news is that it needs a bit of work with the carbs cos it doesn't accelerate well beyond 1/4 throttle, so I'll be having a bit of a play with needles tonight, and maybe jets on the weekend. The right mirror is entertaining too...it looks original and vibrates in a circular motion so all you can see at night is reflected lights moving in circles

Otherwise not too bad all up 8)

Well the needles were already set at their highest position, so I've got the jets out and soaking in some solvent to get some of the residual crap out of them...although I can't see too much in there. I also gave the needles a good clean while they were out.

Looks like I'll definitely need to play with some different sized jets on the weekend.

Nice try mate, but it's not hardcore to ride a bike that's running way too lean

heh I just ha d a thought - this beastie still runs points eh ?? It would be a good idea to replace points and capacitor.........now they are some bits I *don't* have lying around !!

worth checking out though......dud capacitors can cause all sorts of problems ....

will arrange a visit shortly mate.........as long as you have some time over the weekend ??
