94 zzr600 reg/rectifier or alternator problems... PLEASEhlp!

Postby wypuk » Tue Mar 20, 2007 9:16 pm

Hey everyone
i got a 94 zzr which is very tempremental and is not starting

i got a new battery, tested the voltage of it running 12.5v and stopped. (i had to push it and its bloody heavy :P)

my dads friend ascertained that the starter relay is dead and thats cool im gonna buy a new one

the prob is that the battery is not charging. he tested the wires coming off the alternator to the regulator rectifier and he is getting 10.5 om (or volts not sure) so my question is this:

what alternating voltage should be between alternator wires (is it possible to measure it on the reg.rectifier on the 3 yellow wires) is it supposed to be 10.5 or higher?

the reg rectifier has SH650a - 12 stamped on it

He reckons it should be higher coming off the alternator (16ish at least) and from the reg/rec it should pump out a constant number like 14.5 or something smaller.

can anyone give me an idea of the numbers or maybe an idea wtf this all means

ive disconnected the reg/rec and i'll enquire at kawa dealers if theycan test it but id like to know what other people's opinions are so plz help out the electrically illiterate
I wish i had wings....

a new battery might be the go, coz the old one is not accepting a full charge (one dead cell?)

yep...sounds about right
13.5-14.5v is good output from the alternator for yr bike

also
Can I suggest someone checks your electrical system 'Earths'
before you spend big bucks

smitty how do i check the electrical system earths?

im probably gonna buy a new battery this w/e as well as a starter relay, but im worried that the battery is not the issue. is it possible to crosscheck he reg/rec with another bike and see if im gettin a stable current

What about swapping bike batteries with someone who isn't using theirs? Then you can test if the battery is the prob prior to buying another.

u need a multi meter...

stick the MM on the electrodues and see wot the battery has when not under load... should be like 12-13V i think...

then as u hold it there, get sum1 to start the bike... this will tell u how much charge the batt has..under load... u will see a drop...i think abt 10-11V is normal??

once the bike is running check the charge by putting the electrodes on the terminals again...it should read abt 14-15v i believe, and if u rev the bike hard it shouldnt go up past abt 15-15.5v...if ur getting a reading of 16V or more, ur voltage rect is stuffed, and its cooking ur battery...

Optimal voltages for Batteries:

12.0 - 12.4 when not accepting charge

14.0 - 14.4 when charging with no acc running, 15.3 as max

MINIMUM 10.3 when cranking.

If your battery is out of these ranges, let me know where. Try my best to forum diagnose

i think i sorted out the problem.
it was the starter solenoid.
we took it off, then took it apart and put it back together after rewinding a few km of copper wire, now the bike cranks whenever the battery leads are attached :) so im off to buy a new solenoid YAY and the bike FINALLY starts first go w/o revving it hehe
