quote="bonester"]Same engine as ZZR but in a lower state of tune.
Wrong The only thing these engines share are the lower cases, head, pistons, cams, carbies, electronics all different and 1 less cog in the box.

What I should have said was that the ZZR engine was developed from the ZRX. I think the heads are different too- semi-downdraught in ZZR- not in ZRX? I also thought that the cams were wilder in the ZZR. You are right about the box. It doesn't need sixth with the grunt it has. :D I would imagine the electronics to be different too as the rev limits would be different as well as the ZZR having electronics to run the solenoids on the carbs that cut fuel supply to protect the cats if you cut the ignition while running. They probably have different electronics to run the two fuel pumps that the ZZR has as I think the ZRX is gravity fed?
Similar engines, OK!
2 X ZRX1200R 4 X ER6N, GT550, 1988 ZX-10, 4 X GPZ250R, 4 X GPZ900R and GPZ750R :) Yeah I like Kawasakis.

I note that Pro Kawasaki at Nerang are doing new ZXR1200R's for $11090 ride-away, according to the Trading Post... at that sort of price, you wouldn't bother buying one secondhand...

i had the pleasure of looking after derek c's zrx11 when he first moved to hong kong, then tim pinched it and i didnt see if for 18 months till we sold it.

i loved that bike and would trade the zeph on one at the drop of a hat, chungys one had an akra full system jet kit and k&n pods, sounded horn.

it was pumping out 120 odd rwhp but the 12's do that stock, a mate in the UK had the same setup on a 12 except he had the std airbox with a k&N and had 132rwhp.

get the suspension upgraded a bit and its is a comfy bike that handles well and will wheelie off the throttle from 1500 rpm - whats not to like about that.

my wife loved riding the zrx as the grunt was easily accessable she didnt have to rev it past 4K to get arm stretching acceleration - a bit different to the zeph

Cool Bonester, I am pretty sure the ZRX 11 & 12 engines were developed from the ZX11/12 engines, not the other way round. The fifth gear in the ZRX is the same ratio as sixth on the ZZR 12, just the final ratios are different. The cams in the ZZR have more lift & duration, ZX 11 cams drop straight into ZRX 11's & same for the 12's gives quite a performance boost, but as they are often soft, good ones are hard to come by. ZRXOA is the site in the States for mods & info.

Yup Neil ZRXs were developed off ZZR1100- then reverse engineered for ZZR12- ZZR1100 were cast iron bore- then when developed for ZRX went to plated alloy bore- then ZZR12 got the plated alloy from the ZRX. Weird huh!

Ummmmm the ZRX engine was taken from the late '90's version of the GPZ1100...

Remember that blue thing that not many people bought?....

Cheers,
Pete

P.S. If we want to go right back... it's based on the 1984 GPz900... Some of the engine covers bolt straight on.

its good to hear someone get the history of the engine of this bike correct ...

What it represents is a modern version of your classic twin-shock, tube steel-framed, across-the-frame 4 cylinder Kawasaki *naked* bike.........

which actually has its roots in 1972...............

I really enjoyed my test-rides on both models of the ZeeRex(a couple of years apart), but at the time, was still riding my 1980 Z1000H..........even though it was over 20 years older, the familiarity was instant. But at that time, it was difficult to justify spending 15k? on a bike that was *so* similiar to what I was already riding.........(the H has much improved frame/suspension engine and brakes than stock)......as silly as that may seem to some......

They are a great bike, one of the best *all-rounders* you can buy........just like their Granddaddy was in 1972 !!!!!

Went to the dealer yesterday and threw a leg over one and pushed it around the yard a bit and they do hide their weight well it was less topheavy than my six but i have to book in too go for a ride and want a second hand one anyway.

Apparently its dificult to prise the owners off them once they have one.
If I rode my bike at the speed of light, what would happen when I switched on its headlights?

 that means the Kawasaki designers have done a good job........they are *meant* to look old-school.

GSX1400 is a good old-school version of the grandaddy GSX1100 (first version) - they are a good-lookin' piece of kit as well.......

the other 2 manufacturers  :x ........ have no idea about how to design a retro-looking bike properly.......
