chain or wheel issue

Hmmm i got the bike back from narellan kawasaki, they did a great job, but im having an issue with my chain i think, it makes a "whirr" or odd noise when its moving.

up at about 60km/h it sounds a bit like "hmmm.....hmmm.....hmmm....hmmm" and it gets faster with speed, so its not dependent on engine revs.

i didn notice that without the bike being sat on, theres about 1.5 inches of up and down movement in the chain, is this too tight maybe? or do you think its somthing else.

im just afraid if its too tight that it will throw out that bearing like fallen_angels motor did.

You should have about an inch freeplay with you sitting on the bike.Was a new chain fitted at this place?If not then it sounds to me that your chain has a tight spot and is on the way out.If thats the case,turn the wheel until your chain is at its tightest and do your adjustment at that point.
You may find the chain pretty loose when its off the tight spot,but better that than too tight or you can do some pretty nasty damage like output shaft bearings and stuff.I would replace the chain as soon as you are able or can afford it.

what do you mean tight spot? anyways yeah its an older chain, but i was told it was in pretty good condition.

hmmmm, i might pick up another chain just incase, i can always get it done.

do i have to do sprockets at the same time? mine arent that worn and im not that rich :x

edit: oh it was running fine when it was loose too *but it was UBER loose, im talking about toucing the centre stand when it was down :shock: :shock: :shock: :shock: :shock: :shock: :shock: :shock:

Yep it sounds like the chain is rooted.To check the tight spot,put your bike on the centerstand(if you have one) and rotate rear wheel.You will feel that in a certain position the chain will be tighter than in another position.This is usually when the tight spot in the chain is on the sprocket.
You say your sprockets look ok,that would prolly be the back,have you checked the front?This wears quicker than the rear as its smaller and turns more revolutions than the rear,hence the wear.I usually replace 2 front sprockets to one rear.

hmmm, how cheap do you think i can get a chain for? its not hard to put on anyways. well THAT hard :lol: im sure ill find something to screw up, but still.

I believe i saw chains at pole position for around 60 dollars. decent deal?


EDIT: gah! i checked, there IS a tight spot, looks like ill be getting a new chain when i get a tyre. Whats the best price people have been getting chains for, and is it easy to do yourself?

Yep my chain is roted and i get a new one wednesday and sprockets as well and it makes those very same noises.

The chain cant be suitably adjusted with the tight spot in it and i can get a inch of play in one spot but 2 inches when I spin the wheel'

Can get a rk x ring chain from the local stealership for $220 or a did xring from the tyre god for $120 so its worth a few days wait and a price around.
If I rode my bike at the speed of light, what would happen when I switched on its headlights?

so am i in any immediate danger of snapping a chain or collapsing a bearing? or is it more of an extended period of wear thing?

Well i dont like riding the bike while its like that but dont have much choice and I fitted a scottoiler on the weekend and left it set so it pumps out bucketloads of lube and that quietened it down a lot.

Dont try to overadjust it that will break something for sure, I bought genuineish sprockets fo 66 bucks for both of them(from stealership) then you need a chain and is it a 250 you ride if so you can use a joiner link and do it yourself.

Mine is a riveted job and i probably should have bought a chainsplitter/joiner tool but ohh well the guy thats fitting the tyre can do it.

Would fix it asap and keep the lube up to it but dont try to over adjust it or you might screw the gearbox or something.

yeah we were inspecting the chain and the tight spot seems to be pretty close to what does look like a joiner link, so hopefully it should be easy, but either way meh.

because of this ill probably cancel my summernats trip and just put some money into the bike and into some hobbies for christmas

chains are pretty tough mate, ive only heard of one snapping and that was fixed by the people who sold it to macca!

When i had my two fiddy (spada) I was lazy and didnt bother adjusting it, gotta love those stops in the middle of the night to pry the chain off the swingarm and back on the sprocket

Common problem to chains that dont get enough attention, I doubt if it would break from having a "hot spot/s" It'll loosen up as you ride it & then feel better. But certainly take it onboard & schedule a replacement & probably sprockets as well in the near future.

yea..loose chains jump off, tight chains damage bearings...

if ur changing ur chain, do ur sprockets ..otherwise they work against each other...

Also the worn chain will damage the sprockets, i noticed the end of a few teeth missing off mine when it got changed.....well worth it for the silent bike it is now it sounds way less busy.
