ATTN: Uni students...

Postby Neka79 » Sun Nov 05, 2006 8:01 pm

question for those of u who are at uni, and accruing HECS fees...

when u signed up for uni (or whatever u do) did u have to sign up for HECS fees and what not??

reason i ask, is a freind of mine who only went to UNI cos her parents forced her, and they told her they would cover it if she went, is now being told they havent been paying it, theyve been doing the HECS thing, so shes gunna owe $30odd grand when shes done....and she never wanted to go to uni...

i reckon its bullshit just quiettly...

Just make sure she declares it with her employers so she doesn't get hit with a massive tax bill at the end of the year...

Learnt that one the hard way.

Or she finds a nice guy with a engineering degree and hooks up.
If I rode my bike at the speed of light, what would happen when I switched on its headlights?

From what i have heard the HECKS thing would have to be one of the biggest money makers, in the sense that after you have your degree you then end up with a massive bill. 3yrs at uni @$30k/yr thats $90k and you still need a job at the end.

Mina has got an engineering degree.
I hope to get mine soon.

HECS is just a loan, some people expect uni education to be free. Dream on...

then i went to master and now nearly finished...my master degree is about 1.5 years, i assume i will have a bill of nearly 30000 after all...dang...

Uni *used* to be free as it was seen as an investment by governing authorities.

These days I guess it isn't, unless you work for the uni doing research.

HECS typically covers about a quarter of the costs of running the tertiary education sector. Further, it doesn't accrue interest, it's open-ended (there's no payment deadline), and to avoid paying it, all you have to do is go work overseas. HECS is repaid as tax on income earned in Australia. Don't earn any money in Australia, don't pay any HECS.

3yrs at uni @$30k/yr thats $90k and you still need a job at the end.

Would you care to cite some examples of HECS-eligible university courses which cost $30K per year?

I assume she enrolled, signed the forms, provided her tax file number, etc. (Ignore the rest of this post if she was a child prodigy and her parents enrolled her and signed for her, before she was legally an adult)

Old enough to go to uni is old enough to NOT go if it isn't what you want to do. Sounds like her parents did something pretty nasty and dishonourable, and I do feel sorry for her for that. OTOH, she needs to realise nobody "forced her" to go to uni. If she wants to be treated like an adult, she needs to act like one, IMO.
