What are fairings made of?

i did some cracks on a zzr not long ago using plastex , which worked very well

i have a cheapo dremel clone from supercheap which has a great tip included which works fantastic for grinding out cracks to allow the plastex to fill in

make sure you use some 80 grit to roughen up the area to help with adhesion and as suggested give it 12 hours to cure properly

To add further to the suggestion of the dremel idea from J5, i got a Dremel clone from Dick Smiths for $25-40, and a toolkit with a few dozen grinding discs & tips and more importantly for this purpose, round and bevelled routing heads all for $20.

given the crack, heres what i'd do. However bear in mind im unsure on the layout, what bits are bolted on, but i take it its fairing plastic that the mirrors bolt through? if so remove mirrors and side fairing to give good access to the plastic from any angle, you'll need it!

Do all of your prep work first and in one go, sand the areas that are currently whitish until they are down to the plastic, then use a round 3-4mm routing head and grind 2.5-3mm deep into the crack, use masking tape to hold the plastic in its desired final place in both gap size and lateral movement.

Then plastex it first in one of the worst cracked spots a bit at a time to ensure you get a good bond everywhere (i would start with the front 2cm or so at the top front of the mirror mount, then do the very end of the fairing up the back and work my way back towards the middle).

Once this has cured for a bit then you can remove the masking tape and finish fixing the crack from the inside (experience has shown me that setting these things from the outside first is far more accurate).

Good luck RG, once you get this sorted, you'll feel quite comfy about doing it yourself for any future work on the bike fairings.

I got the bike like that 2 yrs ago but never bother to do anything about it.
Apparently the crack got wider after 2 years... :?
I'm going to sand it down, fix the crack and repaint the whole bike.

mmm thats a bit nasty RG hope it works out with the repairs
