Non-Motorcycling things to do at the Island?

Well, here's a question! What things can you do (apart from the Penguin Parade, or anything motorcycle related) at Phillip Island?

We are having what could be, due to the boys ages, our last family weekend away. We are roughing it in relative terms, tenting it at a caravan and camping park. (I say roughing it, but mind you, the tent is a 1/4 scale of the opera house!!! Three rooms and two awnings!:shock: )

We are taking all the pushbikes so we can hopefully, weather and stamina permitting, use these to get around mostly. but we will have the car if need be.

So what things are their to do and see at the Island when you're not drinking piss or watching/riding bikes around?

I have been looking into this myself as we are taking the twins not this weekend next. Doesn't seem like a hell of a lot. Mine are younger then yours so we are off to the Koala Centre

then a ferry ride to Stony creek and back

to keep the waist line in shape
ride on down to Seal rock ..or Rhyll
have an ice cream...and ride back

just a cupla suggestions

btw you ever been thru the race track visitor center?

I Have eaten at just about every eating place in Cowes over the last 15 years that I have been frequenting the races at the Island. So Food isn't an issue Smitty. We are really roughing it too, taking the camp stove and all for cooking duties, so the only time we will be eating out, is maybe for a coffee or an Ice-cream as you suggested.

I have seen the visitors centre at the Island, as has the family, so we won't be doing that either. Plus, although I have made no promises to anyone, nor mentioned anything, I would like this weekend to be motorcycle or motorcycle related activity free.

Naturally we will do the Parade one night. I have seen it maybe 6 times already, but never tire of watching the fat little fucks waddle up the slopes to their burrows!

The seals will be checked out too, as will the usual beachcombing activities families do while exploring a beach.

But I guess, in here is not the smartest place to ask about such things, as I like most of you, only ever go down there for one reason usually!!!

Sorry Mick.................I'm still having problems understanding my rationale!!!!!!! fancy going down to the Island, when there are two ride days and a SBK school on there, when the weather is going to be brilliant...........and I'm taking my family, the tent, the pushbikes.......but NO MOTORBIKE!!!! WTF is wrong with me hey? I MUST be getting old!!!

Mick, It's just one of those things you gotta do sometimes with a family. The kids are nearly at the age where they will literally refuse to do stuff with the oldies, so this is prolly our last hoorah as a family holiday.

Mr. 16 is too cool for us, and Mr. 14 is just hangin in there!! I reckon by halfway through next year, he won't want to be doing stuff with the olds either!!!!

However, I am looking forward to the empty nest syndrome rather than the other way around.....It's cheaper for one! (anyone with grown up kids will get this one!!!!)

Mate, at 16 and 14 you're lucky to be getting away with this one! I hope you find something to do down there, but I reckon these days the empty nest thing is almost and urban myth...they'll be coming back and sponging off you for many years yet.

Surf Strika - Phillip Island is reknowned for it.

Take a wetsuit and a body board and get onto some of the great waves down there. When it's working it's brilliant.

Works for me and 17yo son since he was about 12 - bondamundo (and makes up something for the days where Dad pisses off on the motorbikes.)

Cat Bay is a fav.

Opposite the Koala Sanctuary on the main road is a place called "A maze n Things" my boys really enjoyed it. Loads of things to screw with your head inside and the maze outside is quite difficault too - great place to lose the kids
The Koala sanctuary is a great place to get photos see below. I dont recommend the pengiuns, you sit right at the back of the beach, the pengiuns are tiny and come out when its dark, so you can bloody see them. Although you do see them on the walk back as they get to their nests, but you are not allowed to take photographs as the flash upsets them
Then as Smitty said there are cruises, visit the seals, go to French Island etc.

Thanks for the tip on Cat bay Greg. We will definately be beaching it often as we can anyhoo! Got the rods and tackle too!

Alex, we are actually staying at Amze n things. In the park section. So we will def be doing some of the things the boys don't consider too "Kiddy" for them! And Donna is a big a Koale nut as me, so we will prolly take a couple of walks through their. We can get a big combined family three day thingo for feck all to get us in.

With the Penguins Alex, their is a secret to getting to see them, and it is not to follow the herd. The first time I saw them, we were late getting in, and the stadium was packed so we went down a walkway where the penguins waddled a few inches away from us. A few years after this, they turned that section into a pay extra to sit there as they found more people standing down there due to how close they got.

But if you are early, the secret is to sit at the far right hand side of the arena as you face the beach. If you blag an end seat, they waddle past a few feet from you. Last time we were there, a penguin wandered along the seat right next to us. If I had moved my hand three inches to the right I would have touched it. He just stood there, checked us all out and waddled off again. Pretty cool though I must admit.

Thanks for the P.I. Link, but usually they are full of the usual array of standard top ten tourist spots. I was more looking for local knowledge.
