Opinons on Muzzy exhausts + Jet Kits - '03 zx9r

My new bike came with a stock can, which simply has to go :D

I can get a full Muzzy system out of the US landed here for just over a grand, so I'm tempted.

My questions , for those of you who have owned bikes with Muzzy cans / systems are:

- Were you impressed ?
- What air filter did you run ?
- What jet kit did you run ?

I've also heard one of the jet kits is generally considered better than others in a 9r ? What have you used ?

Finally, I'm having real trouble choosing between a polished stainess end can

Id go the unpolished/titanium/stainless look for sure, easier to look after and always looks good.

as for jet kits, ive had a dynojet kit in dirt bikes, they worked well and made noticable difference with some holes in the airbox... Not sure which one you would use and where to get though?

Ask Glen, he had a 9 and is ...uummmmm..... experienced with bikes.

stainless is shiny, i like shiny things. its also easier to repair if you get a dent or similar in it.

i had a muzzy on my zzr6, loved the sound. i think they are one of the nicer looking pipes around. i was having a "pipe" discussion with a mate who just today purchased a pristine 01 model - i'm sure he'll be along shortly.

on the other hand, if you go for the akra no need for a jet kit :wink:

they do slip on for your bike that looks very nice, i'm sure you've found this site http://www.akrapovic-exhaust.com

BTW forgot to mention even tho the pic is of a carbon can they do a titanium as well, price is the same for both i believe

i'm pretty sure it was the dynojet kits that had some trouble with the needles, some did a fair amount of damage to carbies. from memory performance bike mag in the UK farked 2 sets of carbies on one of the long term test bikes.

one of the reasons i opted to get the akra and no jet kit. 107K and no problems seems to make me think i made a good choice.

BUT if you had to get one i'd see if ivan still does kits. or take it to a mechanic that knows his stuff - if they are good they wont need a jet kit.

On my 7r : full muzzy stainless system + BMC Filter + Factory Pro Jet Kit.

just went through the same thoughts down here

go the exhaust and spend the extra on dyno time

a decent dyno operator should be able to sort it out without the need for an exxy jet kit

and as already suggested jet kits can cause more probs than they solve

agreed, doing the jetkit yourself, unless your experienced at it, can lead to a lot of pain and anguish. Also a lot of places wont touch a kit you've put in yourself that is running way outta tune in case you've farked things up badly (i made some general enquiries even though i was determined to fix it myself, which i have :-) )

Muzzy's are good but I believe a fair bit louder than the Akros.
I'd go Titanium, looks race. Carbon is easier to maintain though.
Go with a Factory pro jet kit as the Dyno jet kit requires drilling out the carbs. Theres not much in it as far as performance goes.
Don't waste your money on a filter, take the mesh out of the stocker. The only filter that will give better HP is a BMC Race filter, not recommended for the road.
While your at it get a Factory pro ignition advancer, 4 deg will do the job and there pretty cheap from memory...

A little bit of head work and you could get near on 150hp out of it. :wink:

Titanium is as easy as a rub with a rag and some WD40, what do you have to do with Carbon?

I found the titanium gets finger and grease marks on it and dents quite easily.
They can also burn brown when overheated.. Nothing that an hour with a scotchbrite pad and some polish won't fix. (bloody tossers on a dyno stuffed mine and melted the Akro sticker..)

The C/F doesn't show the dirt as much and will take a bit more of a bashing... I've had practice.. :oops:

The Titanium would be lighter though....

I guess you have tested the durability of the Carbon :lol:

I was just curious 'cause I've had no problems looking after my titanium one...no finger prints etc.

It was a fair few years ago. The needle jets in ZX9 carbs are not replacable. The dynojet needles where a bit coarse because of an apparent glitch in their machining process. Acted like rattail files in the needle jets and screwed them up completely. Throw the carbs away and get a new set. Not cheap. Having said that, this mustn't be a continuing issue or they would have gone out of business years ago. The factory pro kit doesn't require mods to fit, the dynojet does. Call me paranoid, but I don't like making mods that I can't easily reverse. If you get it completely wrong or if it fails to perform, you can always reverse it. Start drilling your slides to fit a dynojet kit and you're commited big time baby.

Im with Madkaw on the carbon.
I had one on the rex and it always looked good, and was very very light.

Akra was number one on my list of pipes to get, but they're just so farkin expensive ... akra slip-on for about the same $$ as the full Muzzy system

I think whatever I end up with will be dyno tuned by my new-best-mate Dudley from Dudley's Motorcycle Service & Performance Centre (the guys who dynoed 87ninja's GPX)

stay away from dynojet jetkits on a 9R, not just for needle wear but for their bandaid-fix approach... not sure if the later models are the same, but the C-model kits require you to plug some things that shouldnt be plugged...

Ivans or factory pro is the way to go, great after sales support too. should be able to get one delivered with the exhaust for about $160 too

the advancer is a great mod too, about $125 locally or us$50 from the states...

and yeah removing the mesh from the air filter is great BFYB 8)
