I have 20 litres of 10w-40 Mobil1 in my garage
and its a car oil...for my GenIII and its also used on all V8 powered
HSV Commodores

don't confuse it with bike oils.... :)

A few years ago I asked a Castrol rep this question
and the answer?
car oils are for cars and bike oils are for bikes
the difference..?
bike oils have extra stuff in them to cope with wet clutches
and extra stuff to let your gear box live (EP additives etc etc)
which is why a bike oil is dearer than an equivalent car oil

Car oils do not have these extra chemicals/polymers/additives
and also, a lot of car oils have friction modifiers which don't let
your bike's wet clutch do its jobs..coz the oil is too slippery
another reason not to use a car oil in a bike

Funny though that some university tests suggest that Mobil 1 car oil is best for a motorcycle, huh! BTW I run Mobil XHP in all my bikes and cars except for the ZZR which I run on Shell SX4 semi- synth. Friction modified oils are no good for wet clutches, but good mineral oils work well. Just re- ringed my GT550- will be interesting to see how long it lasts on car oil. None of my bikes show any signs of undue wear- probably about 60000km cumutively on Mobil car oil. GNs are pretty shagged but they always have been.
2 X ZRX1200R 4 X ER6N, GT550, 1988 ZX-10, 4 X GPZ250R, 4 X GPZ900R and GPZ750R :) Yeah I like Kawasakis.

main reasons i go with motul are...

a) it smells better

b) the esther additives make even the clunkiest of gearboxes feel A1

do any others have the same esther additives? or can you buy it seperately? if so ill go back to safeway oil (its SG rated and thats what kawa recommend)

Interesting read. Love this quote:
Since dealers are not about to waste valuable floor or counter space on a product unless it produces a decent profit, it is obvious that motorcycle-specific oils have become one of the premier parts department cash cows of the 1990s. [/quote]

In the ZZR I've tried:
Motul 5100 10W-40 and 15W-50, both fine, but 10W-40 is better shifting in the cool
Mobil S 15W-50, $24 for 5L at BigW, no complaints
Silkoline Comp 4 20W-50, gearbox very quiet and shifts better than Motul, but too think for winter, but I've drained it out and put it asside for summer when it hits 40 out here.
Mobil Extra 4T 10W-40 can't really comment as I haven't ridden since I put it in to replace the 20W Silkoline. (My master link retainer clip came off and been waiting for a replacement to arrive, thanks to Richard at Narallan Kawa for helping with that). I was going to get Mobil 1 Racing 15W-50 but I wanted the thinner oil for the sub sero mornings (I have a Mobil card with work so I use Mobil exclusively now).

I put Caltex Halvoline Semi-syn 10W-40 in the GPz250 after the rebuild and so far no leaks or smoke, but I've left the bike in Sydney so I haven't been able to get it on the road.

In England I always swore by Silkoline Comp 4, many bikes no real issues. It's a bit hard to find here, but Race Rep have started selling it, so may go back to old faithful

07 ZX10R since new, tracky TBA, KX450F, 87 CR250 restoration, GT MTB - I've got serious thrill issues, dude

My bike 2000ZX6R

Before: Motul 5100 at $50
After: Valvoline XLD Premium at $17

Difference: none whatsoever :D. In fact the valvoline is SJ grade which the manual recommends. Motul is SG.

where do you live?

Mornington Peninsula. So far only found a quote for Motul 300V, $29 for 1L. That's a $120 oil change, + filter. :P

Where'd you get it? I can't find it on the Mobil site and none of the places I've called so far stock it (or have it on their systems). If Bonester is right, it might work fine in a bike after all?
