Motorcycle Towbars- anyone ridden with one?

Postby bonester » Tue Jul 04, 2006 9:13 pm

Bought a trailer recently off ebay, including a towbar to suit a XJR1300 which I got to fit my GT550. I haven't seen how they are supposed to mount so I made a guess and also rang the manufacturer to see where they mount on the bike. It seems quite flimsy to me, and not up to the 230kg rating that it says it has.
Has anyone got any experience with towing trailers with a motorcycle? Any tips? I took the trailer (empty) up and down the street a couple of times and it felt weird to say the least. Wonder how it would go loaded and at 100km/h?
Could you direct me to some good pics of Classic brand towbars fitted to motorcycles? Their website is not clear enough in the pics. TIA! :)
2 X ZRX1200R 4 X ER6N, GT550, 1988 ZX-10, 4 X GPZ250R, 4 X GPZ900R and GPZ750R :) Yeah I like Kawasakis.

Hi Bonester
Used to do heaps or rallys (min 10 a year) & lots of touring in between & have had a few diferent trailers including steel & fiberglass towwed behind a GS1100GKE & 2 BMW,s an RT & RS 1100
Mate go to a motorcycle engineer to get the rig sorted you are running the risk of disaster if the tow bar is not fitted correctly.
Yes the materials may seem flimsy but if it is fitted correctly then there should be no probs. & it takes a while to get used to especially under brakes & you can forget emergency braking that you may be used to.
good luck :D

Thanks Rob. I guess the bit I really need to know is how tight the mounts at the footpeg brackets need to be- the way it is fitted at the moment means that the bar is rubber mounted to the bike via the rubber mounts of the rear pegs. Is that how your towbars were hooked up? Classic emailed me saying that they had no pictures or fitting instructions for the bar. :(

Yes but they were solid mounts to the frame / top of shock mounts / foot peg brackets where ever there was an available spot but as suggested try to fing a motorcycle engineer for fitting or at least to check your set up
