zx6 crash protection (frame sliders etc)??

Has anyone got any advice for crash protection for the ZX6.
i have a 2005 model.

ive been looking at frame sliders and the prices vary drastically so im not sure what is crap and whats not.

I thought i would see if anyone else has fitted these things to their zx6 and if you have any advice or opinions on different products.

Do people feel that these things are worth it? do they protect your bike all that much anyway?

well a friend has a full crash cage on her bike an d when she lowsided she still ripped the engine casing off.

the crash cage had crash nobs, on the side aswell.

so go figure.

i have also heard of the frames sliders warping and damaging the frame when they are sliding at high speeds.

leave the pillion foot peg bracket on, excellent frame slider, will save you smashing your ducktail, may even save your subframe from twisting!

Get some of those EB crash pucks too.

Oh and those race stand bobbins will also save you grinding the thread off your rear axle if bike goes down on right side.

Oh and if you just scuff up your engine casing, bog and repaint it, much cheaper than $400 replacement!

levers are only $15 and $26 for clutch and brake and get some aftermarket bar ends before you gouge the crap out of yours.

Aftermarket rearsets to replace stock pegs etc, save em for resale, then sell rearsets seperately.

I had always scoffed at the idea of frame sliders till i crashed my Zx6R at track day and did about $1000 damage to it.

When i had my 03 zx6 it fell over twice, both when stationary.

LS before crash knobs:
Scratched engine cover, mirror, indicator, fairings, ducktail, bar ends, bent clutch lever, broke footpeg.

RS after they were fitted:
Some scratches on the fairing, slight mark on the leader pipe on the exhaust.

They are definetly worth it, and if you do a search, you'll find this has been discussed many times before

i reckon they are worthless, they don't do anything and look ugly.......helps u to bounce up the bike when u drop it so that it can be dropped again

get insurance and ride safe

Im really only worried about it for ride days (at the track) cause its insured on the road.
like hidepenny says - ride careful and insure it.

i think in the long run i will look getting some race fairing for it.

You'd be amazed how many stories I hear from people about their crashes, and most of them include *the crash knob saved a lot of damage*

crash's are designed to mainly save the fairings in low speed accidents, you don't want to use your insurance everytime you drop it do you?

Not everybody is as good or experienced as you Hammer, you know that, just because you haven't dropped a bike in many many years it doesn't mean that it's impossible for other people to do so. I'd die of shock if you dropped a bike, crash's would be a waste of money for you, but newbies/inexperienced/new bike? hell yeah.

i personally think hidepenny should invest in some themselves, new bike, from the questions they've asked they're obviously inexperienced, and when they fall on the left side the engine covers take the brunt (just ask the guy who came into work yesterday to pick up his new engine cover who had an 04 zx6 - low speed acco) That cost him over $200, and oggys worth $140 would have saved that.

If you have a high speed acco you have insurance, low speed you have crash's.

*note* I am not having a go at anybody in any way, but I DO hear a lot of stories from customers, esp the ones that come in to get parts, there were two more guys last week with bikes having damage that crash's would have prevented. One was an 05 zx6, the other an 03.

If you feel that may drop you bike at walking pace maybe its time for a few lessons of basic bike control. It maybe cheaper in the long run.

They dont make oggys for 12`s cause of frame design.

First of all, crash knob does not protect the frame. It actually transmit impact force direct to the frame (unless it has imbuild shock absorber, or the extended no cut one. But the no cut one will deflect and bend the frame mount and also dent the case covers)

crash knobs does not protect fairing to that great extent, there is bound to be scratch marks and things.. ie respy/replacement is always needed.

crash knobs only works on soft lowside, and it if the road surface is too rough, the crash knob will be riped off anyway.. (nothing works on high side.. )

So at the risk of damanging the frame, couldn't be better to let fairings to it's job, cushion the bike when it falls? I've too seen bikes gets flips in the gravel trap by crash knobs too...

Hidepenny, you're right in a way, if you're going fast sure yes they can cause more damage, and if you do track days only, sure, put race fairings on, and insurance doesn't cover track days anyway...


Like i said before, they're mainly for low speed drops, not everybody can touch the ground easily, ground slopes away, there's gravel on the ground etc it can catch the unwary out at any time.

It happens, I think you'll find most of the people on here will have a story of when they've dropped or almost dropped a bike due to something unexpected stopping.

My first one was a combination of inexperience, sloping ground and a high bike. Second time was i was just hopping of it, suspension had been altered, bike was more upright than standard, i wasn't careful it fell over. That was over 12 months ago. And I've only just come up on to 2years of riding
I haven't dropped a bike since, but i know it could happen, so i chose to protect my bike if it did (it's taller than my last one so I'm extra careful how and where i stop)
My low speed manouvers are not too bad actually, I recently did a refresher low speed manouvers course with another forum

Well I crashed on turn 3 @ QR on the weekend & my crash knobs saved ALOT of damage....

As far as only providing slow speed protection, How slow is slow speed protection?

I crashed @ 80kph? maybe? not really sure? & I thought I came out pretty damn good...

& it doesn't matter how GOOD or FAST you think you are, even Rossi falls off.....

i fell off once , as usual i was riding way beyond my ability, and my crash's saved my life!

i was pissed , high on crack , speeding & generally doing bad stuff , otherwise a normal day in my world, and i fell down !

the oggys , at home on my bike , prevented me from certain death by being small black and too big to swallow !

otherwise i would have taken em & certainly died from poisoning .
