tools for removing Oil filter

anyone out there knows a very effective tool (not the cheap ones sell in k-mart or target)

to remove oil filter for bikes and cars

i have tried the 2 types so far, and found them not good, it's the metal piece made a circle and turned to grip the filter

and another type is the metal piece is tightened by a bolt going up and down to tightened or loosen

and idea????

You need the 3 pronged spider type that is used with a ratchet.

Its the best for the tight space you have on the bike.

You will probably have to go to a Tool shop to get one though.

A hammer and a screwdriver, punch the screwdriver though the filter works every time.

Is the tool I use, damned cheap too :)

Yes, I've been known to do that, although try not to puncture the oil filter because if its on too tight you will just tear the casing. Try to hit the srewdriver onto the base to loosen it, you may need to make a few indentations before it will turn..

Then again, just go to supercheap and buy an adjustable oil filter wrench for $6 and that should work nicely...

Disclaimer: I'm not sure how its mounted on the 6 but the wrench works fine on the 10...

I've got one of the ones that uses a strap that's made out of seat belt type material and a bit of square tube that fits on a 1/4 inch drive. Works well in confined spaces and will fit any sized oil filter.

i was reading and i thoulg special tool ? iv never used a special tool :P


but i used a screw driver :D

Kawasaki Australia will quite happily sell you a cap-type socket for about $15 that sits on top of the little dimples that go around the top of your filter. The socket is 1/2" drive. They work better than the screwdriver method, which is too damn messy, and you're screwed if the filter if too tight and it just tears (then you're pretty well stuffed, as nothing else is going to work).

Interestingly Honda give these sockets away with a new filter...

...I also have one of the webbing strap+1/2" drive types.

Never used one on a bike. ZZR1100 doesn't use a spin on filter. But they work a treat on cars. Everytime I buy a car I seem to buy one that was previously serviced by Arnold Schwarzenegger. Filters are on so tight you nearly need explosives to remove them. One of these works a treat if the filter is seized on or installed by an idiot.

sorta still on topic, having read in the manual that filters need to be put on witha tool ashand tight is not good enough, i think i cranked my filter on too tight, its got a small indentation where i went that extra 1/8th of a turn. I used the metal band oil filter wrench and the base plate part that grips it pushed in about 0.5mm and made it look a bit ugly on that side, should i take it off and replace my brand new filter i just dented? or is it ok? its a small dent so im inclined to leave it, but i dont know the internals of it so i wanted to run it past u guys.

the dents about 3/4 of the way along (so not at the engine end), the filters for a zx6 99 model engine.

Next time you pull one off cut if open and have a look inside (if you can be bothered)

Always make sure to run a film of oil onto the o-ring of the new filter eh?
