06 10r - Ohlins damper issue

Postby Afrodesia » Mon Apr 17, 2006 10:34 pm

Hey folks
Unsure if any of you have seen or heard of this, but my mates 1500k old 06 10r looks like the expensive damper is cactus... first photo was when we first noticed a few oil drips on the frame and fairing, the next is after we put a bag on it to catch drips (taken about 12 hours after)...

anyone seen or heard of this before??

I've had a quick look on the ZX10R.net forum and at least one guy in the states has had the same problem at around the same distance. Had it replaced under warranty though, so your friend would be best taking it in.

Damn, thats pretty bad...
I believe they are a "built to a price" ohlins, but that shouldn't happen.
I had one on my 9 for years and it was fine, until I crashed and bent it, then had some supposed expert butcher the repair. Then I had it repaired again and it was fine for years...

What do you expect, Ohlins is owned by Yamaha so there trying to sabotague the 10... :-)

Yeah, when I saw the finish quality at the show I thought they looked a bit, need I say, tacky :?

I wonder what they are worth and if you were in the market for a new 10 wether ya could drop it at a price and upgrade to a smhick one.

Spose being under warranty ya could just keep going back, but thats hassle and oil dripping at that rate around tyres and brakes can't be good

Good end to this :)

He went to the purchasing dealer this afternoon and they swapped it over right away with one pulled off a new bike on the showroom floor. Apparently Kwak Aus had 1 in stock - but heres the scary bit...

the Barrel assembly (may include mounts?) as listed as a Kwak part number was $1350!!! (or something like that, inc gst.. memory is bad)

Reading hte zx10r forum a couple of people have commented about the perceived lack of regular ohlins quality and damping force on the unit fitted to the new 06 10r (expensve sticker maybe?), could only find info about 1 other unit failing though.

Oh before i forget.... a black 06 10r was in for crash repairs at the store this afternoon with plastic and header pipe damage. $3500!!? for the headers??? OMG you would save coin gettin a full Akro system with genuine part prices like these. Now just waiting to get my left fork leg replaced.

$1350 is pretty silly money for any damper

you can get a scotts damper kit for most any bike for us$404 plus about us$45 for shipping... i know what i would do if i had a out of warranty 06 10R

There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. Some kind of high powered mutant never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.
