The 95 6R Racer Reconstruction Project

Postby samhasa636 » Sat Apr 01, 2006 5:06 pm

Hi All, its been a while... I've been busy getting my head around rebuilding the track/race bike. Some may recall my request for parts and the shots from the aftermath...
Anyway, thanks mostly to Strika for personally delivering the major parts (ie: frame and fairings) the rebuild is well under way. So I thought I should show some pictures of the Work In Progress.

To say the least, I can't wait to see what this beat looks like completed.
The Doc says my blood is green. Thankfully, there is nothing he can do to help :)

Big Mitch - and with each passing day I find more to do... I always wanted to build my own race bike, but not this way.

Mad Kaw - Started racing new era 2 last year. I missed round 1 so far this year. Hope to be riding again for round 2.

Aardvark - damn straight (or bent and cracked as it happens)

Pontikat - The bike was originally born to supersport racing. AFAIK its never been on the road. Its had a few owners to date and now me.
Yep that was me in the top pic. A few weeks before the crash.

Just found one of the mount points on the engine block is cracked. Its a weld job, but just another hurdle in the Jana Drama run for glory.

That's a hell of a job you've got in front of you Sam. Good luck with it.

Don't forget to post up when you're next racing. I'm sure a few of us would be keen to cheer you on.

Quick update (/bump  )

Just took delivery of a rolling chassis thanks to Strika's racer wreckers. The complete list of parts is too extensive to list. Let me just say that I love his work. I now have a spare frame, fork, swingarm, shock, radiator and blah.

Meanwhile the crack in the engine block, lower engine mount, is welded and rearsets fitted.

All I need now is a day off, some workshop floor space and zero interruptions and I should be back in the world of 6R racing.

OK. Building bikes isn't the hardest thing I've done. But having a donor machine to take parts off was a real blessing.

So, I woke early because I was just too excited to get going... before long I had the motor in the frame and the forks and we were up on the stands. In this photo you will see the balck frame machine (foreground) which is what I am building. The chrome frame in the background is the donor, and the mangled wreck behind that is the old frame. You will also notice I am not a gardener.

At this point I'd just hit the starter for the first time, there was no fuel in the system so it was just to make sure it was turning over... which it did no problem.

Then I made a trip up the road for some fuel and with a drink in the tank I was very happy the old girl started, first time (once fuel was sucked in).
And look, more green.

And I'm almost there. Just need to:

Bleed brakes
Find a tacho
tidy up dash
fix rear brake reservoir
Put dzus fastners on belly pan
Change tyres
GO TO THE TRACK!

Cheers mate. Well, I figured I had to do it all justice - so, I had to do the job properly. Oddly enough, the bike looks a million times better than it did before the crash. The fairings fit and look brand new.

Its almost too good to ride. Even if it was I'd still ride it... after all thats why we build th :)
