Under Pressure.

Postby Strika » Fri Feb 24, 2006 2:29 pm

Was thinking about tyre pressures this arvo while inspecting the state of the Hornet's tyres after the trip.

With BT014's and even 002's to a degree, they rely on very much lower pressures to get them to wrok properly. If you have them up around the Max recomended pressures, they slide all over the place. At lower pressures they grip mint. The trade off is tyre life, with me struggling to get 3500-4000ks out of a set of 014s.

I frigged about with pressures over the trip, and found that pretty much these Metzlers are better off with a few more pounds in em. They still work fine at lower pressures, but I found that even with more pressure in them they still gripped really well, although the harder I put them the less feedback they offered.

At 29/30 for the hills they are pucka race tyres and you can't get em to slide or feel skatey! At 34/38 they still grip well, but lose a little in feel. But they don't wear hardly at all. So I am running them at higher pressures, unless it is a cold (say below 24c) day. This seems to work well with no slides so far, although as I was alone on the last ride, didn't push it too hard. (I would hate to be stuck at the bottom of a cliff with my bike on top of me till the dingoes started to eat me! )

The wear has been particularly impressive. Usually on a jaunt such as the one just completed, It would be tyre replacement time upon my return, as there was a lot of high temp, high velocity sections. And as those who have done lots of miles will tell you, anything over 140 kph for any constant time, will overheat and wear tyres very rapidly. Most of the ride, apart from yesterday thru the mntns, was done in 35c+ heat. So for the tyres to not show any premature wear is impressive. And some of those were at 140+gazelles/kilotron constantly.

Here is another interesting fact. I reckon I could improve fuel economy, by runing hard touring tyres. When I was doing the high speed runs, I could feel when the tyre was hot and sticky and working at its best, as the rolling resistance would increase dramatically. I could physically feel more braking when slowing, and found it harder to turn it! :? But fcuk did it feel planted. :D

If I had done the same run on 014's using sim pressures, they would have worn far quicker than the rennies and wouldn't have gripped when needed. If I had run the pressures I used to run on 014's to maintain grip they would need replacing about now I reckon. :x

Isn't Metzler owned by Pirelli now???? Maybe some of the Pirelli race tyres might be worth a look these days too.
:D

Heard good things about them from hammer think he gets 800 kms out of a set on a 12r  midlles are brand new.

I got the feeling that you had to run a bit more air in a bridgestone like 36 in the front and rear and a bit less in a pilot power. 33/33

I cant get a bto20 to warm up properly on a zx6r think you need a 200kg plus bike for those.

realy like a dunlop kr108 slick and be buggered if i know how i am ever going to go back to road tyres got a set of kr106 slicks too to try as well.

must buy a road bike sometime its a shame the z1000 doesnt come with a fairing (helps to keep the dog shit off ya.)
If I rode my bike at the speed of light, what would happen when I switched on its headlights?

after years of 34F/36R or thereabouts
and reasonable mileage (like 15-20,000  )
and very good grip..hot or cold, wet or dry out of Bridgies
(on Gpzs and GPx's)
I find the 41F/41R in the Pilots just a tad different on the 12
bit slippery when cold but stick when hot...???
like shit to a carpet, the front Pilot is especially brilliant

I did manage to spin the rear up on the 12 last weekend on reefton
but you had to be cackhanded...full throttle at 50kmh
in tight turns...just left blackies on the road

me thinks I am gunna get less than 15,000 out of the rear

btw
Kawasaki recommend 41 F&R for the 12

cheers

I have few experiences with tyres, first set of BT19/BT20 lasted about 12k including burnout attempts , then wanted cheaper ones so I fitted BT13/Dunlop something. Dunlop is especially el cheapo and got nice looking threads  Can't feel a damn difference but maybe I ride like a sissy. On the track too I felt do difference so will be on the lookout for even cheaper tyres (what are they?)

I do feel lots of difference due to pressure. I like 5-6psi lower than recommended coz it's not so bumpy mid corner and I can feel nice slides, good for the heart.

Different stokes for different folks, I run my BT014's at about 34PSI and they stick like shit to a blanket. I make a habbit (ask Greeny and Neka) of checking tyre temps on a few bikes when we stop on a run and most times my BT's are warmer and stickier than the guys who run Powers.

Glen
the pressures are listed in the 12R owners manual
and for me are a starting point.

once I get used to it (need a few more k's)
I will start playing...suspension setting and tyre pressures

cheers

Yeah i realise that smitty........i think from memory my manual for the 7 is 38/41.

For sure .....get used to your bike then play around with it. Comes back to type of tyres/riding etc as well.

Plus yeah suspension setup makes a big difference when well for myself the rides are of the more "spirited" type.
