HEY DAD . I DUG A HOLE !

Postby the kid » Sun Feb 19, 2006 11:13 am

While bikeless and working in Casterton , there aint a lot to do on the weekends , so when the earthmoving contractor asked if i wanted to give him a hand out on a farm , seemed like some fun .

Been pretty dry around here for the last 5 yrs so the owner of the property wanted 6 new dams built . This one is gonna be more like a small lake when its finished .

Mainly drove the Dump truck , hehe , 10.5 L diesel 20t empty . Auto with 5 speeds forward and diff locks for the slimy stuff .
Had some play time on the 20 t Excavator too .

Boys need Toys

Fun watching the D7 spinning both tracks while pushing the scrapers through the more slippery stuff .

dumb question, is it just a big arsed hole or do you dig a hole then put a layer of clay base on it?

i know theres a bit of a science to make dam walls so they break in a certain spot if they overfill...

i've driven loaders a fair bit, theres a nice feeling knowing you can pulverize anything in your path
i work in a small concrete plant, its amazing the things you achieve when your too lazy to get out of the air con cabin, like turning taps on and off, and opening bin lids and straightenind bent handrails after i've powerslid into them. :D

Not dumb at all . There is a bit in making them . Local conditions and siteing the wall . Depending on the soil they may not need to import clay . Some require a cut off wall of clay built into the middle of the bank down deeper than the bottom of the dam to prevent water running straight through . They will build a weep pipe into the wall to set a top level and that pipe could be 2 or 3 metres below the top of the bank .
There is plenty in it , even for a farm dam .

Check out building Hoover Dam in the series "Seven wonders of the Industrial World " Faaaaark me , when you start running cooling lines through concrete , unbelievable

I got a project on the go at the minute where we are using liquid nitrogen to freeze the soil before pouring the concrete, and then liquid carbon dioxide injection to cool the concrete
Fark I hope it works
