Need to replace Cam Chain and Tensioner

Hi all,

I need my Cam chain and Tensioner replaced and Major service.

Its been a week since my bike started making loud tapping noises.

ive got a quote from:

-Red baron (Liverpool)

$300 to replace cam chain and tensioner

- MMT (Granvile)

$380 to replace cam chain and tensioner
$580 to replace cam chain and tensioner and major service

- Parra Kawa

$300+parts+ $160 for cam chain and tensioner
$400+parts+ $160 for cam chain and tensioner and major service

So what iam really asking is:

Are these prices reasonable and are the workshops any good, if not can you recommend any in my area.

I have no experience in getting bikes serviced but....what is worth the $100 difference in parts for the major service? ~2L oil, 2L coolant, 4 plugs?? I would hope you would get more than that for $100

Hey mate, if you're willing to travel out a bit more to Campbelltown go to Campbelltown Motorcycles on Blaxland RD.

They really know their stuff there and decent prices because it aint one of them big commercial places.

They have a dyno too :D

Not sure about the quality of the shops, but the prices seem fairly average.

The major service would likely include:
3.5lts oil - ~$30
2xplugs - <$10
oil filter - ~$11
cable/chain lube - ??
plus labour of the above - $100 sounds reasonable.

You could also try the Narallan Kawasaki, just down Cowpasture Rd and Camden Valley Way

Major service at B Kwaka here in Melbourne cost me $450, admit that was also unjamming a jammed throttle cable but seems a shitload of money to me given that oil and filter is probably $20 of that cost, labour $100 max I reckon.

Done a good job I guess but still a shitload of money.
A good mate will bail you out of jail, a true mate will be sitting in the cell next to you saying "Damn, we fucked up!!!"

Just parts to do my own servicing is usually 130 to 140 dollars

Ive booked in the gurl at MMT in granville, they seem to know there stuff and pretty friendly, lets see how they go with working on the bike.

Will let yas know after i get her back.

got her back 2day, she sounds soo sweet now after the service.

The only problem is that the clutch is slipping and thats getting me down :(

After spending $553 for a major service and replacment cam chain and tensioner, now i have to spend another $200 to replace the clutch.

I might try Compbelltown MC for this one.

I have a 94' ZZR250 too.

$200 to replace the clutch? u mean the clutch plates?

Damn that is dear....I chenged the clutch in my GT550 for $100- and I bet it has more and bigger clutch plates than the ZZR- done in way less than an hour- so no way they should charge that much! I bet they just left the adjustment wrong..... :x

Don't do too much riding with it if the tension is loose, I had the tensioner lock up in my project bike and caused the timing to get out and it broke 2 valve rockers.

Something along the lines of measure length of 20 links of cam chain and lenght of uncompressed tension spring as listed in service manual, if they are out of spec then they are worn. The problem is that you have to pull a fair amount apart to do it.
