Is 200klm's out a rear tyre good?

Postby Glen » Mon Feb 13, 2006 7:20 am

Had an opportunity to go for a quick blat yesterday arvo,as the wife and the two girls were heading out for a spot of shopping.

Decided I'd head across the Sackville ferry up to Colo Heights and then back and maybe out to Wisemans or something along those lines.

Met my mate Pete theTechnicolour Ducati pilot (the bikes technicolour not Pete) at the Mc Graths Hill Bottle'0 and headed off.

Just got through Pitt Town and theres's a nice little left and right, into the ninety zone, start winding it up a bit and all of a sudden, whaaaat. the bloody thing won't steer. For some reason I seem to have a ZX10 that steers like a Yamaharley.

Pull over and oh bother guess what. Nice new Pilot Power 200klm's old flat as a tack.

Five minutes of relaxed conversation that would almost get me into the Tourets Syndrome support group and I think Oh well lets find a shady spot and work out how this Tubeless repair kit I've had under my seat works.

Half hour later and I'm putting back to Pitt Town to get some real air.

I can't rave enough about tubeless repair kits. Dead easy to use and worked perfectly (albeit under 80km/h as the pack says).

Anyway I'l now get a chance to use our new Sponsor. Off to Narellan Kawasaki today for a new Pilot Power hopefully.

Bitch, bugger, shit, f$%k'n arse, poo packet, flamin' mongrel bloody puncture, bastards that leave shit on the road, why I oughtta.......

Tourets, Hmmm thats under T in the phone book.....

What caused the flat?

You might not need a new tire (or tyre as you spell it in this country), because if it was just a puncture, they can repair that with a plug, if it was a broken seal they can repair that too....

That's a bitch mate! Good planning to have the repair kit handy though. I carry one of the "tyre in a can" jobs from motol, I don't know if there as good but they look east to apply. Perhaps I should get some plugs as well. Did you put a plug in the hole?

Haha thought you wore it down in 200kms, a 200km burnout? Meh..

A tubeless repair kit sounds like something really handy to have in that back compartment, might invest in one.

Yeah those tyre repair kits are great- $10 at supercheap. I had a nail in the rear of my GT550 and the repair is still good after 3000km. Dunno if I would trust it in a ZX10- they have slightly more power than the GT...
I also bought the $6 electric tyre compressor from supercheap, which you can make smaller by removing the outer case and chopping off halp the wire- will fit in under your seat too, then you can inflate your tyres anywhere! 8)
As long as the damage isn't in the sidewall, or torn past a certain limit it can be repaired- a mate of mine had a punture on his Buell which I couldn't believe they repaired- but it held until he replaced it- which included lotsa burnouts. (hooligan bikes! :) )
2 X ZRX1200R 4 X ER6N, GT550, 1988 ZX-10, 4 X GPZ250R, 4 X GPZ900R and GPZ750R :) Yeah I like Kawasakis.

Something punctured it although whatever it was either flung out or never stayed in to start with. It just left a nice little hole.

I'll stick a fresh tyre on it and maybe get the other one plugged properly. I'll see what the inside of it looks like.

I prefer to keep it under the seat of the bike but hey, whatever floats your boat

Spot on though mate. If I didn't have it it would have been a shitfight

Yeah. The things have three rubber plugs, three gas cylinders, a reamer/inserter thing and a razor blade (presumably to slash your wrists if it doesn't work, although I think it might be to remove the excess plug hanging out). Worked a treat

Compreesor would be good. The three Co2 bottles got it to 18psi which was enough to get me out of the shit but I'd hate to be 100klm's from a servo.

I think the more permanent plugs are cool, cause they whack them in from the inside. I presume they take the one I shot into it out and replace it.

200km is a bit poor, even for a zx10r :)

I always thought that if you carried a repair kit, you'd never need it, so I keep one under the seat, I got a pump with mine, which is good for topping up the preasure, damn hard work though.

Cheers

That was always my rationale, because I knew that whenever I didn't have one they would catch me out (whoever they are). I know this is true, the voices told me. Paranoia's a bitch.

It's worked for 26 years though, until yesterday. Bastard lying voices...
