Running in a new tire, "A right of passage?"

I put a new front tire on yesterday... "well actually some lads at a bike shop did"... And I have to get that coat of wax off before I can relax and have at it again. Now they nagged me to take it easy for 100km so I was just gonna ride it off with all due caution but this morning on that other great kawasaki site I read how some people just wipe it off with a rag dipped in thinners. Now being lazy, and still very cautious on the bike, this sounded like a good deal, but then I thought again...as we double minded people do... perhaps I should just do it the hard way and earn my new tire.

What does everyone else think? What do you do?

The thinners idea would get some of it off, but it'll never get it all off.

Either way i'd still be careful as if the road is iced up for the first 20km, take it easy for the next 80k's, slowly using the sides of the tyre more and more.

No real shortcut afaik.

Just ride..

Heard of people using some wet and dry... and giving it a light sand

but never really even thought about doing it myself.

Yeh, feels right to me too. I got an hour before the traffic gets mad around here so I think I'll take a ride down along the river where its twisty and quiet. should be able to burn off 60 odd kays soon enough.

Yep just ride it. Raced lots on production tyres and many times did 1 warm up lap and then flat out RACE on a completely fresh set.

Coating will be off it in about a k. Make sure you get the sides too with a few wobbly left rights.

I would say watch it i have had green tryes let go and its like being on ice, i use the supercheap grease and wax remover them head up the highway for 20kms or so then turn left and head for mt mee and if you have time left over after a lap of mt me i come home over mt glourious should be good after that.

the highway warms them up for ya.

the slippery stuff is called..... mould release
and there is only one correct way to get rid of it
and thats wear it off.....
(I worked for Dunlop and a plastics co that used this stuff)

however, you can accelerate ( a bit) that process
by warming the tyre ...best to go for a ride
and also wiping the tyre with white spirit/acetone/kero etc
have tried the sandpaper method...does not work imho
riding the bike is the best coz the tyre gets warm
and you wear the mould release off at the same time

my advice..go for a ride and take it easy
for the first 100km

I can't believe what they use to fit the new tyre. Notice the GRIME there ? It seems like oil Of course it makes the tyre farken slippery !

The second time around I put in new tyre I just wiped it with good amount of soap (might as well wash the bike while doing it) then flog it no problem.

But yeah try to do that before cleaning the grime you'll have some adrenalin times

Thanks guys! It's half worn away now, fair bit up the sides still but I cranked it over on a few and it felt fine. Actually it felt AMAZING!! I had this shit 2 year old battleax on and now I got the Pilot power, it looks a lot "rounder?" and the bike just seems to fall into the corners with no effort at all. I only have to nudge that bar and down she goes. feels great

I think you'll find that the old tyre was plain f*cked.

Acetone is the go but you still neeed to roll it over to the edges with a rider on it.

Or if ya go to Two Wheel tyres, while they balance it, they grind off the wax at the same time

Well if I can't get it all off the edges I'll make sure I rub it up against some gutters so it "looks" like its got a rider on it

I have Pilot Powers on the 9, and they are great tyres for feel, cornering and warm-up time. They also seem pretty durable as well.

mate..ride the thing..seriously, u can have it done within an hour (100km/h)...i ussually hit the power hard after i get a new one (in a str8 line) to spin it up..then i do weavy things....then i do a few corners..and hey presto, ive had a hour of fun & tyre is scrubbed...

p.s. listen to yoda..its not just cos he's ugly we call him that...
