Of the three east coast cities i have spent most of my time in Brisbane. Melbourne does have its attractions but the grey weather for 8 months of the year will get you down (even Nthn Tassie has more sunny days).

whaaaaaa
8 months...???
mate
Melbourne weather is cool and ocassionally damp for 3 months of the year
..where did you get 8 months from?

we actually get 8 months of great riding weather...March-May
and Sept-December..and we get less rain than Brisbane
and no storms or flooding like Brisbane does
and definitely NO golfball sized hailstones

cheers

Lived and worked in melbourne 8 years on and off between 1977 and 1996, it not just the rain and cold which may only last 3 months but the constant grey skies and that farking cold wind from the southwest that blows for about 300 days a year got to me. My last year working in Melbourne the week after the Cup (mid November - late spring) we were standing in 2" of hail and it was 11 deg celcius.
But hey if thats your bag and you dig the 3kmph over limit speed cameras more power to you bro...my biggest concession to Melbourne would be its proximity to the best road i've ever ridden full stop (Bright to Omeo via Mt Hotham) and the coffee  .

One thing about Melbourne's weather - you get to experience all 4 seasons in one day  and thats is only a *miniscule* exageration...

redzed - the weather down there has *improved* a bit in the last 10 years....greenhouse effect means that Melbourne has almost moved 150km 'N' as far as its normal temperature is concerned.......its happening everywhere.......I heard the other day that Sydney is now experiencing weather patterns more common to Pt Macquarie than it ever used to.....I know that here in Canberra the summers are getting hotter and hotter........the only thing we don't have is the beach..... :( :( :(

Adelaide.... good hills roads east of the city, nice wide industrial roads north of the city, nice coastal roads south of the city, and well.... most of us try to avoid the west :p

Best touring car event in australia, best V-8 raceing event in the world, good houseing, low cost of living, plenty to do if you know where to look (I think the eastern states people confuse a lack of people sitting at a cafe' drinking latte' as opposed to actually riding as "no night life").

On the down side if your coming from the UK and have had a few "trafic incidents", a fair chunk of the new police here are former UK coppers :p

The original poster of the question is a pom, like cold and grey skies are going to worry him? :D

Speed cameras are a bastard, no argument from me there, coffee is great on Lygon st, if you love the smell of fresh coffee then Lygon st or Acland st are pretty bloody hard to beat.

I don't really think the camera's in vic are as big a problem as everyone makes out.

Been riding 4 years and still no fines. Yep I ride everyday, and I ride at a speed I deem safe for the conditions, not what I'm told to ride at.

if melbourne is sooooo great, why is every bloody mexican moving to Brissy :?: i don't mind the hot weather riding (going out for trackdays in 40deg plus heat) plus i can ride all winter and not need heated hand grips, electric socks, and 15 layers on to stay just above freezing.

On the ride side of things, yes we have a boring circuit in QR, but we do have Mt Tamborine, Mt Glorious, Mt Mee, and the Sunny Coast hinterland to play with and when your done it is only a short ride to the beach to cool off.

Really anywhere in SE QLD, but Brisbane gets my vote.
