The answer is yes......
There faster, handle better are smaller and lighter...

The 7 is a great bike though and will be much cheaper...

I have owned and tracked and ridden both for at least 10,000klms each so I have a small idea in my own little way

ZX7 is about 195kgs Dry, with about 120hp at the back wheel for a good en.

05 ZX6R is about 165kgs dry, with about 115hp at the back wheel for a good en.

ZX7 is truck like solid on the road and shopping trolley vague on the track

ZX6 is fast steering on the road, and rock solid on the track

ZX7 is long in the wheelbase and heavy to steer with a racer ride position

ZX6 is short in the wheelbase and light to steer with a racer ride position but bars are closer so a little less weight on the wrists

ZX7 brakes have nice feel but lack outright power and no slipper clutch

ZX6 brakes are so progressive in feel with massive power that is easy to control and a slipper slutch that lets you exploit this.

ZX7 was best looking sports bike of it's day IMHO

ZX6 is best looking sports bike of it's day IMHO

Tyres are 180 for ZX6 so SS ruber is plentiful, ZX7 is 190 rear so not a lot of tyres avail (although 2006 may be a different story with 190's being run i bet)

Hope this helps. :)

Top writeup there Strika.

But I have to ask about the power figures. I think the factory rated them at like 110-115 at the engine, and I think they made 105 - 108 or so at the wheel? My old one makes 113 at the tyre with a huge racepipe setup with custom can, and K&N filter n jetkit, so definitely makes more than stock. And I think they rated them at 203kgs dry.

I rode an 03/04 636 and to me it didn't have the same high end kick as the 7, but upon reflection I think that may have been due to the fact it was a way smoother powerband more than anything else. It definitely pulled harder out of the corners. I tankslapped it before I got a real chance to push it in the corners but the few laps I did on it gave me the impression it would be way quicker into corners and overall.

Ridden a couple of each both on & off the Track (no really) but of course you never really ride a mates bikes like you would your own.

IMHO. To Metaphor as i can ..... the 6r is a Circular Saw & the 7r is a Chainsaw. Both will take a leg off quicker then you can spell KONI & both are more comfortable carving sh1t up then Idling through Carparks.

Of course the the 9r is better then both, but that's a whole other metaphor.

The zx7r is actually 205 kg dry and would be lucky to put out 110 hp at the rear wheel.... The 05 zx6r is 165 kg dry and should put out over 110 hp at the rear wheel.

The zx7r is around 125 hp at the crank and the zx6r is 130 hp at the crank...

Simple
The zx7r was a great bike in its day
but there is nothing that the zx7r would do better than the modern 05/06
zx6r. The zx7r is a 1996 bike nothing changed from then on
and the zx6r is 10 years newer and its just a fact of life .
Enjoy the zx7r for what it is a great sports bike of its time but you couldn't compare it to the '06 zx6r IMO

Well apart from comfortably fitting a taller/ bigger rider.
I test rode a 6r before getting the 7 and found em just too damned small.
