New shock is like a pogo stick!

Postby deafwish » Wed Feb 28, 2007 9:35 pm

Hi folks,
Just wanting some advice, please!
I have just fitted my new (second hand) 2003 ZX636 shock, to my Z1000.
After I had fitted it, I jumped on and was horrified at how much it was like a pogo stick!
I played around with the preload, compression and rebound, unsuccessfully.
I removed the shock and put the stocker back on, which was 100% better!
After inspecting the now removed 636 shock, I happened to turn the top adjuster (compression?), by hand and it started unscrewing!
It opened up (no pressure inside) and I saw residue of oil, but it was empty...... :?
If I simply refill the shock with suitable shock oil, will it work fine again?

uhm, where the hell did you get that from?

afaik these things are supposed to have oil in them, but they are supposed to be pressurised too. Wait for others to confirm, but im pretty sure that it should be pressurised. If others confirm it as such, contact the seller and ask wtf is up.

If it just needs a refill, then find a buddy with a manual and find out just how many cc of shock oil you need.

If it hurts, you aren't doing it right.

Just got back from ProMecha.
I know remember why I didn't give him my business, when I had my Hornet.
He is a belittling, arrogant, know it all who was trying to tell me that I have no idea what I'm on about.......
He told me that he finds it amusing that I thought I was smarter than Kawasaki, by fitting a 636 shock to my Z1000, when it doesn't come with it from factory.
I tried explaining to him that thousands of Zed riders had succesfully completed this swap with excellent results, but that was falling on arrogant/ deaf ears.
He wouldn't tell me what I needed to do, other than:
"Leave the shock and the bike with me and we'll strip the shock, fit our expensive valves, change the spring and rebuild it." Typical salesman.

What an absolute tool.
I will be taking my business, once again to Krooz Tune.
At least I get honest answers with out all the salesman bullsh1t and equal, if not better workmanship.

/Rant.

If it's OK with mick Hams and Neil, I'll have a crack at answering your question?

Yes, they should have oil in them, and no, you can't just refil it unfortunately. They are gassed and pressurised DW!!!!!! :(

Can I highly recommend you give trevor Manly a Call at Tm performance befre you lay down your cash with Krooze tune again. He knows Kawasaki stuff really well DW! It may be worth a try?

My understanding is the pressurisation is to stop "cavitation" or bubbles forming in the oil...

I have had 3 scotches though... :drinkers:

Daz, who did you deal with at ProMechA. I dealt with Peter last week and he was shy and retiring and gave me the impression he'd rather be out the back getting his hands dirty than dealing with the customer-facing side of the business.

Doesn't really tally with my experience at all, and it makes me wonder if I was just lucky. My Hornet has been fine since (I think Peter did the work on it).

Either way that's shite service, make the bastard fix it or get your money back :x.

I had my shokie regassed recently and had a sit on it with no gas in it and it didnt work at all (had no dampening effect it was just musshy)but once the gas went back in it was business as usual.
If I rode my bike at the speed of light, what would happen when I switched on its headlights?

I did deal with the owner (older bloke).
I also remember him telling me that my Z1000 was a commuter bike and that doing what I'm doing is changing the character of the bike. He told me that if I wanted to go down that path, to go and buy a Yamaha FZ1!

What a tool.

I went to Krooz Tune and David told me that he has had a few customers do this swap, with good results.
Instead of telling me that the shock needs totally rebuilding, he took the shock and quickly removed the cup & spring to view the piston, which luckily was in great condition. Based on viewing the piston, he quoted me a better price than ProMecha and told me exactly what needed and what wasn't needing to be done.
He even said that if the diaphram doesn't need replacing, it'll be cheaper!
He even treated me with respect! Shock b1oody horror! :o
What a champ.
My business will once again, be going to Krooz Tune.

Neil I mentioned this in your threatening PM to me. I was just returning serve from a previous occasion when you took this into another thread! I was also taking the piss, which obviously seems to upset you. I'd really appreciate it if you would just lighten up a bit! It's the internet for gods sake! Take a chill pill or go see a doctor cause your gunna have a heart attack or something!

Here is a copy of the lovely PM i recieved from Neil. I think he fancies me!

Well if you cant get over things, and want a stouch be it in public, you go for it girl.
All I can say is get the fuck over it whatever it is.
You dont know Mick Hams or myself from a bar of soap, but your quick to critisize others with your know it all attitude. You dont have a mortgage on experience!
Somewhat contradictory from some of your previous posts that I have read.

So pull your skirts up girl & have a go, should be more interesting reading some of your posts!
