LACONI POSTS BEST PSG-1 KAWASAKI CORSE QUALIFYING OF 2006
Superpole delivered a great result for two members of the PSG-1 Kawasaki Corse team, as Regis Laconi scored the first top four of the year, and Chris Walker set a personal 2006 best of fifth. Fonsi Nieto (PSG-1 Kawasaki Corse) overcame a difficult first day to qualify for Superpole, but had to settle for 14th place and a fourth row start for Sunday’s 18-lap Superbike races. Troy Corser, won Pole at a new track record pace, and both Laconi and Walker beat their regulation qualifying best times in Superpole, Laconi by an impressive 0.8 seconds. The much-feared rains which were forecast for today stayed away and the track offered up dry conditions; conditions which may not be repeated on raceday, with rain still at least a strong possibility.
REGIS LACONI: 4th – 1’46.597: “All very happy because the Superpole lap was very good, especially as the practice lap before that, when I was on qualifying tyres, was not so good. It would have been nice to have the fastest lap time of all but I am happy, because the team is making a good job. I am particularly happy because my PSG-1 team is based in Italy and it is important for them to do well in Monza. I hope we can find more dry time tomorrow in warm-up, to refine our set-up even more.”
CHRIS WALKER: 5th – 1’46.978: “It’s been a hell of a day, with two big crashes The second crash ended up with the bike on the wrong side of the barrier to ride it back to the pits but I was eventually given clearance to ride it back and rejoin the action. I bashed my arm and head a bit and I have felt groggy all day. I have to be happy with Superpole though, and getting a second row start after all the things that have happened was a good finish to practice.” FONSI NIETO: 14th – 1’48.240: “So-so in Superpole. I have had quite a few problems over the weekend but I think I have a good rhythm. I think it will rain tomorrow, probably for both races, so we will see what the weather does. For all, it will be the same. In Superpole it was not so easy because you really need to get someone in front to break through the air. It will be hard from the fourth row, and if I get two top tens tomorrow I will have done well.”
