LACONI POSTS BEST PSG-1 KAWASAKI CORSE QUALIFYING OF 2006
Superpole delivered a great result for two members of the PSG-1 Kawasaki Corse team, as Regis Laconi scored the first top four of the year, and Chris Walker set a personal 2006 best of fifth. Fonsi Nieto (PSG-1 Kawasaki Corse) overcame a difficult first day to qualify for Superpole, but had to settle for 14th place and a fourth row start for Sunday’s 18-lap Superbike races. Troy Corser, won Pole at a new track record pace, and both Laconi and Walker beat their regulation qualifying best times in Superpole, Laconi by an impressive 0.8 seconds. The much-feared rains which were forecast for today stayed away and the track offered up dry conditions; conditions which may not be repeated on raceday, with rain still at least a strong possibility.

REGIS LACONI: 4th – 1’46.597: “All very happy because the Superpole lap was very good, especially as the practice lap before that, when I was on qualifying tyres, was not so good. It would have been nice to have the fastest lap time of all but I am happy, because the team is making a good job. I am particularly happy because my PSG-1 team is based in Italy and it is important for them to do well in Monza. I hope we can find more dry time tomorrow in warm-up, to refine our set-up even more.”

CHRIS WALKER: 5th – 1’46.978: “It’s been a hell of a day, with two big crashes The second crash ended up with the bike on the wrong side of the barrier to ride it back to the pits but I was eventually given clearance to ride it back and rejoin the action. I bashed my arm and head a bit and I have felt groggy all day. I have to be happy with Superpole though, and getting a second row start after all the things that have happened was a good finish to practice.” FONSI NIETO: 14th – 1’48.240: “So-so in Superpole. I have had quite a few problems over the weekend but I think I have a good rhythm. I think it will rain tomorrow, probably for both races, so we will see what the weather does. For all, it will be the same. In Superpole it was not so easy because you really need to get someone in front to break through the air. It will be hard from the fourth row, and if I get two top tens tomorrow I will have done well.”

What's with Fonzi in 14th... He had a blistering 2nd race last round getting knocked back and charging through to overtake his team mates... Hope he can some through at catch the lead boys at some stage to get some decent points.

LACONI SEVENTH IN RACE ONE FOR PSG-1 KAWASAKI CORSE
It was a challenging raceday for the entire PSG-1 Kawasaki Corse squad, at the fastest circuit of the season. Having qualified well, Regis Laconi was seventh in race one, and but for a last minute slip could have been fifth. Fonsi Nieto’s weekend started badly when he was one of many riders taken out in a first corner crash at the Prima Variante, but he rode to a battling eighth in race two, after Laconi had been forced to retire. Chris Walker was disappointed at his misfortune, being held back in race one by a technical issue, and choosing not the ideal rear tyre in race two.

REGIS LACONI: 7th & DNF – 31 Points, 14th Overall: “We had a problem when I stopped in race two, an electronics problem for sure. I was very disappointed because the bike felt good and I made a quick start – but we stopped too fast. In race one all was OK, except I made a small mistake on the last lap, so Karl (Muggeridge) and Andrew (Pitt) passed me.”

FONSI NIETO: DNF & 8th – 37 Points, 10th Overall: “It looked good for a while but I lost the first race in the big crash at the first chicane. My rhythm was very good but, I pushed very hard to pass many riders at the beginning of race two and in the last part I paid the penalty.”

CHRIS WALKER: 11th & 9th – 33 Points, 13th Overall: “The bike was good in the second race. We decided to run a different tyre and it didn’t have as much side grip as I thought it would have. It was a split decision and I had the casting vote, so I only have myself to blame. In race one I had problems when the chain started jumping.”
