Hey guys, decided to really clean up the zxr b4 i get her back on the road.
i'm gonna polish up the frame and can.
thought i'd get ur opinion on the exhaust pipes.
should i polish them up or repaint them black.
also is there any way to get rid of the rust.
any input would be great.

bugger that was supposed to be in engine and exhaust.
someone wanna move it across 4 me??

I voted black, purely because of cost, but polished would look great, especially when you get some heat through it

Not with a mild steel exhaust; it would rust back over inside of five minutes.

A couple of coats of exhaust enamel is the only option. I think they make it in high-gloss silver; that'd resemble something polished.

Sorry I assumed replacing them with poished stainless

paint it black and put some rust neutraliser on it first to try to stop it bubbling back through.

You can actually get some "Blueing kits". Mostly used on rifle barrels to get the barrel, well blue, and it protects (a bit) against rust. No idea if it'd work on something like an exhaust manifold...

Rust like that seems to suggest some riding in wet weather, or high humidity and the bike not getting used for a bit. I wouldn't worry too much, but some high temp manifold black would be the best bet if it bothers you. Just wire brush it first, and wash down with turps.

I vote get it HPC coated with either the black or polished, that stuff is worth its weight in gold. I used to sprint race a tr6 triumph and the only mod between two meets was having the extractors coated, i picked up just over a second.

forgive me if i seem a little wet behind th ears.
but what is HPC coating and where can i get it done.
Is it literally worth it's weight in gold cos if it's too expensive i won't bother.
I'll just get a full sports exhaust system instead.

You gotta shift all that surface rust first, an that'll take ya!
Whatever you coat 'em with expect it to burn off, too much heat generated out of these high revving fours.
Stripped my '9 back to no rust but too much pitting for polishing so I high temp blacked 'em, nice smell first time she got hot.
Done bout 2000 k's and startin to flake lightly.
Just put the fairing back on and pretend you didnt see it

good luck polishing it, dependant on the materal.

This is what is looks like if it's stainless or chromed, not sure what the finishe was on mine.

i had some extractors done at a place called jet-hot coatingsthese were brand new(to suit a 4v windsor of course)but they give a pretty good guarantee not to flake discolor and crack well worth a call my friend
maybe a cheep alternative?i think the pipes cost $400 not sure and you can also get what ever color you like silver looks pretty much like chrome....also it is heat treated so you can touch without getting burned

I used to use stove black, y'know the stuff they use to polish wood burners or pot belly stoves

Stick the fairing back on and leave 'em, if they rust through get a set from a breakers yard - now you have your licence how long will you stay on a 2fiddy? Like Rossi said, save the wonga for your next ride.
