About time Australia catches up with the rest of the world. I wonder what the consequences will be if I get caught filtering as a learner rider.
Thoughts on the new rules?

I agree that it's about time that we had this and actually agree that full licenced riders be the ones that can do it as I wouldn't want a young bloke that may have never ridden a bike before try and work his way up between my brand new Beemer or merc

Clarkixlc, what models BMW/Merc you got!? Recently purchased a CLA45 AMG (hence my user name) Back on topic, been filtering through M5 traffic for a while now too. Maybe they'll be kind and turn a blind eye on L platers haha.

Haha sorry mate. I'm not that well off. I don't have either I was just using it as an example.

And I have filtered since I learnt how to many years ago.

Filtering was just the way it was in the UK, particularly getting into London in traffic!
Turns a 4 lane motorway into 7!

The way I read the new rules mean that if I am in a traffic jam and the traffic is stopped or going less than 10km/hr, then I can legally ride between the cars, however, I cannot ride up the bike lane. However, if there is no kerb then I can ride up the bike lane - ie if the road I am on has a bike lane but an unformed edge after this. Any comments?

Just, i would prefer and feel safer going up the bike lane then between the cars

Hopefully it sticks but I'm having my doubts. I was on the way to the airport this morning at 5.30 and already there was a knob head talkback radio host voicing his ignorant opinion that the rule was ridiculous and that people were sick of motorcyclists on the road running around doing whatever they like. The moron had absolutely no concept of the objective of the change and he actually said he was sick of motorcyclists lane splitting and then holding the traffic up when the lights changed. Now I don't know about anyone else here but I've never lane split and not been the first one off the line.....by a very long shot.

Maybe the dickhead drives a top fueller to work

I tried to call and give him a gobful of alternative opinion but I had to park and catch the plane.

As far as I know this is not true? It's legal here in WA?

Filtering itself is also not illegal in Vic. Unfortunately they ping us for unsafe overtake, or not staying in a lane.

Lane filtering/splitting has NEVER been legal in any state/territory of Australia, the fine you get for attempting/doing it is to do with overtaking unsafely/on the right of a vehicle, moving lanes, etc......NSW is the first to take the step in this direction......coppers have either overlooked what you're doing or watched what you're doing and used their common sense

Great news for you guys,i am tipping that will never happen in Vic ,but if i do ever get busted for splitting i have already thought of my defence as i always go to court.Sir in regards to the efforts that all state governments have done lately to unify road laws i makes me wonder why this law has also not been duplicated in this state ,well at the very least trialed.The government were all telling us that it is in everybodys interest to make all road laws equal to avoid confusion from the public.apart from other facts that i will present i hope that this possible precedent and or inconsistancy can be taken into account.

Its being introduced bc Sydney is just gridlocked 24/7! Recently the Mrs n kids drove to my mums place 8km away and had to cross Parramatta Rd. Left at the same time, I jogged there in 40 minutes and arrived when the kids were getting out of the car. So lane splitting has been the norm for ages even on pushies! Its just one less thing they will ping us for!
