96 ZX9R Plastic Oil catch???

Post by Lennyburger »

New member, proud [absolutely ecstatic] owner of a 1997 ZX9R Ninja. After purchasing I had the unfortunate mishap of letting it fall over in the front yard [soft ground, side-stand went underground] and then discovered a small plastic container behind the left hand side fairing. Unfortunately it also either broke on impact or was already broken prior. It has a "WAY UP" arrow and doesn't appear to do more than catch oil from possibly the engine, without letting it drain anywhere as the bottom hose is also plugged up. Anyone know what it's called and what it does?

Airbox drain. You just need to check it occasionally and if there is oil in it you unplug it to drain. There should be another hose clipped to it and there are two more forward of that for the ram air resonators - on both sides near the radiator - that don't have catch cans on them. They need to be drained occasionally as well. Mine often have rainwater in them.

Thanks folks, it is a drain for catching oil from the air cleaner box. Got one genuine for eight bucks. No more stains on the driveway....
