Fuel leak at base of carbs - 97 ZX7R

Greetings from Vancouver, Canada!
New member and ZX7R owner, I've done several track sessions so far this year. Mounted newer race take offs on the front/rear yesterday, went for a quick run around the block to bed the pads in, loaded the bike on the trailer and whew... petrol fumes! Looked under the tank, could see fuel dripping from around the base of a carb.

Possible suspects?

a) the float drain bolt backed out
or
b) the float gasket is leaking

any others? Anything I should know be for attempting a repair, tips?

Thanks,

Brett Hanson

the float needle is being kept open on one of the carbs. It can be one of three possibilities, from best scenario to worst.

1) crap holding it open
2) needles are shot
3) hole in the float

If there might be gunk in it, you can try flushing it out by running it heavily to see if that does a darned thing. But if it wont then its carby strip time.

Thanks for the reply, I had a further look yesterday. The petrol comes out only when the engine is running and it's hard to tell exactly were the gas is coming out from, but it is really dripping quite a bit.
I've got the carbs off, can you tell me what to look for? If the float needle is being kept open, I'm assuming the bowl is overfilling with petrol? Where is it the overfilled bowl allow the petrol to exit? The floats, move freely and don't appear to have any holes.

Maybe try replacing all your fuel lines. It could be one of them has a split...

Have a close look at the float needle and seat, to see whether any crud that might be holding the needle open is apparent.

Cheers,
Brian

I pulled the carbs, cleaning the float needle and seat, replace the o-ring and re-installed everything.
I'm going to assume the needle was sticking as quite a bit of gas was coming out, more than I'd guess a bad o-ring could account for. I didn't see any debris, but it seems to be fixed.

Thanks for the help!
