It will take place in Melbourne the day after the Australian MotoGP round, voicing opposition to a number of current 'safety' proposals

Melbourne’s Independent Riders’ Group has announced details of a major rider protest to take place in the Victorian capital on Monday, October 29 -- the day after the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix at Phillip Island.

According to a recent post on the IRG’s website (click here to see it), the protest will seek to unite Australian motorcyclists against: “The fluoro vest law proposed by Victoria Police; the compulsory boots, pants, jacket and gloves law proposed by Victoria Police; the return of front number plates (and/or stickers or tags) proposed by several officials and Victoria Police; and the anti-association laws proposed by the Victorian Attorney General.”

The protest will be held in A’Beckett Street in the heart of Melbourne’s Elizabeth Street motorcycle precinct from noon, with speeches to be held between 12.30pm and 1.00pm before a mass ride through the city past the Victorian Parliament. A number of rides into the city will take place from various meeting points on the city’s outskirts – check the IRG website closer to the date for further details.

The timing of this protest is a bit unfortunate. The Parliamentary Inquiry into Motorcycle Safety is reporting in December and nothing will happen until their report comes out. If there is anything contentious in the report, the time to protest is after the report comes out while the Government is preparing its response. But TAC, Vicroads and Vicpol all made a hash of their submissions so we may do alright.
