I just read a post about a guys bike that wouldnt start in gear. A few replys sujjesting this and that.... So without me having to go out and look for myself, Is there any reason why my 2003 zx12r wont start in gear? is it a safety thing, or likely to be a loose wire or connection like this other guys bike? Not cool when you ride up through the traffic to the lights, waiting for a quick get away, and i stall it in the middle of the road! and then have to find neutral before i can get away on a, NOT so quick get away

When my bike would not start in gear I replaced the clutch switch and all was good!
Try bridging the switch and starting the bike...

your clutch switch needs a good spray with wizards piss mate, that will fix it.

Was the side stand down? My 250 will start in gear only with clutch in and side stand up, won't run in gear with it down.

If all else fails reffer to the owners manual, which i did. It says that "the starter wont operate when the clutch is engaged and the transmission is NOT in neutral" so i guess it is a safety thing then.... thanks for feedback guys.

Do they define clutch engaged as lever pulled or not pulled???
You should be able to have your bike in gear and pull the clutch in, and start up. As you said its stupid otherwise.
Side stand down, I think as soon as I engage 1st kills the engine... Tho I hardly make this error so can't recall.

If you think its the clutch switch and easy way to test if its f00ked, is get a paper clip; unplug the switch and stick the paper clip into both sides of the terminal.
If fires up, clutch switch needs replacement.
