Air Temperature Sensor, GPZ1100B2

Hey Guys,
I am having some trouble tracking down an air temperature sensor (211761003) for a GPZ1100B2, does anyone have any idea on something that will do the same job - the part is no longer available and I'm missing one...
I remember reading a post somewhere where Gos mentioned some parts were interchangeable with BMW stuff, I just can't seem to find any info anywhere:-?

the air temperature sensor is in the airbox - is this the one you are looking for ?
Normally it is the engine temp sensor which causes issues on these bikes - this is the sensor that screws into the head between #1 and #2 inlets.....
You will probably need to track down a complete airbox for any of the fuel-injected 1100's - B1, B2 or A1-A4. They all use the same style of air-temp sensor and the harness plug is the same for all these models. If you get lucky with an airbox, just make sure it has the air-temp sensor still fitted. Normally these small bits don't get removed from the airbox when they pull a bike apart to wreck.....
The Bosch stuff that is interchangeable, are things like fuel pumps, injector nozzles and O-rings etc.

mmmm.... bugger, that's my problem - got an airbox with no sensor in it...

Not Quite... I have the air box but need the air temp sensor... It looks like this

hmm - now that I think about it a bit more - the a/t sensor on the B1 is in the same spot as the H - it is fitted to the airflow meter and not the airbox. It sits right in the incoming airflow to measure the temp.
The B2 and A1-A4 models - the a/t sensor is screwed into the airbox as there is no airflow meter on these models.
do some searches for NipponDenso parts - the EFI systems on the early kwakkas are all a basic derivative of the Bosch L-Jetronic system used in heaps of Euro cars in the 80's. But the Jap versions - especially the electronics - can be slightly different. A lot of early injected Jap cars used NipponDenso DFI or JACS - Japan Electronic Control Systems. You would probably find that an airbox from an early Datsun 260Z would have the same a/t sensor as your B2.

Ohhhh right - so you reckon both the B1 and B2 use the same sensor - does that mean it's inside this thing?

Yep - on the B1 ( and Z1000H) models - the a/t sensor is part of that airflow meter. It is not a seperate part. In the B2 and A1 models (1982 - 1985) - the a/t sensor is a seperate part as can be seen in the parts fiche diagram.
What could be done is to by-pass the a/t sensor altogether by simply using a resistor of the correct value. When the a/t sensor fails, the ECU will still work and the motor will still run - but the fuel economy will nosedive. If it was possible to work out what the value of the resistance was when ambient air was 20deg C - you could just replace the sensor with the right value resistor - and the ECU would always think that ambient air temp was 20deg C.
Problem being - I have never tested the resistance of the a/t sensor at 20deg C

- but it is something that would be pretty easy to do......
