I'm wondering if there would be any benefit to fitting a rear shock from a 96 onwards ZX7R onto my 93 ZXR750 track bike?

Has anyone done this?

Benefits? Issues? Advice?

Yes.
You get adjustable compression damping. The battery tray fouls the 7s shock reservoir. Get an Ohlins.

Point 2:
H, J and K models have a notoriously hard rear shock (K model a little less so) which only seems to work OK for heavier people. This is apparently due to a spring that is too stiff, too much damping in the shock and the rising rate of the shock linkage not being linear enough. If you are suffering from this here's what you can do: (H, J, K models) Buy a softer shock spring tailored to your weight. Not a complete cure but better than stock and a fairly cheap solution
(H, J, K models) Buy an aftermarket shock. A more expensive option, but a better one in my view.
(J, K models) Use a shock linkage from an L, P or N model, all of which have a more linear rates (not that of an M model though as it has the same rate as that on J and K models). This is a great and very cost effective solution. See K1 suspension Mods and also suspension setup 2 on '91 ZXR750R-K1 for more info on my K1 running a "P" model linkage.
(H, J, K models) Get a new shock linkage from NWS (they make one specifically designed to cure this problem).
(H, J, K models) Use both an aftermarket shock and one of the above shock linkages (likely to be the best solution). Beware though! When you buy the new shock it is best to tell the supplier about the new linkage as the shock may need to be tweaked to compensate (See note at K1 suspension Mods)

I have an L model though so the above isn't much use unless the suspension setup between the J and L models is exactly the same!

I will use the smaller (YTX9BS) sized battery & go for a Lithium version which is way lighter than the stock which is approx 4kg & the lithium is around 0.8kg>

I will have to trim the lower plastic section of the battery cradle & fab an aluminium tray to lift the battery up enough to clear the ZX7 shock reservoir & attach the new aluminium cradle to the plastic

Nah; hit a wall as far as money goes so gonna keep it the way it is for now and maybe do a few more upgrades in the winter?

Yeah I just found I need a new radiator for my ute & a few other bills popping up so thats going to slow mine down for the next few weeks too, Especially if work does not pick up, It was going good before Chrissy

I have the ZX7 forks fitted & the calipers etc on, Need to get some HEL Kawasaki green hoses for the front now, I seem to be getting carried away doing much more than I planned but its all good, The bike will be much better in the end

I also wanted to ask what rear sets you have on your white bike?

I bought them from a company in the UK on eBay, can't remember what they were called but I'll look it up as get cal to you.
They're not setup for road use but you could mod them to work.
They're much higher than OEM but should be ok on a sports bike but not sure about a streetfighter?

Thanks Jim, They look nice but as you mentioned they are much higher so they certainly would not suit my long legs

Turns out the shock I got for $42US is actually a ZX7RR / ZX750N shock

Sounds like you're getting pretty sorted mate!
My streetfighter aspirations have fallen by the wayside for a while as the motor is rooted and money is being diverted elsewhere for the foreseeable future but at least I have the trackie!

Still a bit of work ahead though, The wiring seems to be the biggest task trying to tuck it all out of the way, I am just slowly getting it done bit by bit
It will get there eventually I spose, I need to just focus on getting it on the road now before I go too far with it

I got the ZX7-RR shock fitted & started the battery box modifying, Had to drill the top & bottom of the shock out from 10mm to 12mm so I bought a 15/32 (11.9063mm) drill bit just to be safe & drilled it out & slid the shock straight in through the top with the battery etc removed its pretty simple

I trimmed about 33mm off the bottom of the plastic battery cradle to start with, My new Lithium Ion battery should be here within the next few days hopefully?
I can give you the measurements for the tray I made out of 3mm aluminium sheet if you like? I will trace it out as a template just to keep if anyone needs
