I have a 1976 KH500. It has been parked in a shed for 10 years. When last ridden it was in beautiful original condition. Genuine 19000km. Still stands on original Avons. After 10 years it now needs TLC and unfortunately wont turn over. I know I wont have time to restore so it should go. I have no idea what it is worth. Not a dreamer, just looking for advice. Any ideas on its realistic value?
Cheers

Don't matter what it worth. What matters is what you want for it.

ummmm............no.

It doesn't matter what you want for it. What matters is what the market is prepared to pay for it. You might *want* $25k for a bike - but will never see it because the market has determined the price is only $10k.

For a H1 that may need a top-end rebuild .... if the bike is 100% complete and bodywork etc in good nick - You might get 3 or 4K for it.

Good clean running examples of H1's go for anywhere between 5k and 10k. You may actually be better off fixing up the motor so the bike is running well - with those low k's, running and in excellent clean condition - you may be looking at the higher of those 2 amounts.

To be honest it would probably cost you money to have it removed. I can come and get it for free to save you desposal costs and while I am there i would also happily remove the old beer bottles that i would help you empty.
Seriously look on bike sales for an idea of what they go for. Also post an add in the for sale section here. Plenty of Kawasaki fans on this site would like to own a 500 triple.

I guess the other way to go is to get it running. I have been out of bikes for years. Can anyone give me a general idea of what a top end rebuild may cost. Are there shops about that specialise in Kawas this age that I could talk to? Must admit if it was running and given a bath I would be keeping and riding it. I am in the Sutherland Shire.

a top-end rebuild on a triple will cost at least a gorilla mate. Parts prices have gone through the roof in the last 10 years, especially triple parts. What you need to do is contact Steve Leembruggen at Metropolitan Motorcycle Spares and talk to him about a re-build. Steve knows his way around these motors. You may just be able to get away with a light hone and new rings on the current pistons - this could cut the cost of the build considerably. It just depends on the condition of the innards.

Thanks mate. FYI Steve no longer works at Metropolitan. They gave me mobile number. I will try him.

If it was running fine when parked and in a shed the whole time it will most likley need SFA to get it running. It wont need a full rebuild as it never had a blow up or did it wear out. Its a common thing for 2 strokes to lock up like that after sitting for so long. Pop the head of it and have a look at the bores. If there not bad soak them in WD40 fo a few days and see if you can free them up. You may just get away with a clean up and re ring. Every part you could ever need is on E-bay. Shit a ring set only starts at $65 you can't go wrong.
