SERIOUS QUESTION.... 12R

I have a yoshi pipe installed... no power commander or fuel mapping done.

I have decided that as much as i like its' note, i am of two minds to revert back to the stock exhaust.

reasons being:

1. it's constantly loud... and drones at crusing speed
2. it's angled up too close to the pillion.. and is stopping me putting soft side panniers on.
..
and
3. It looks like the bike is running very rich (sooty, not oily).. and i can get flames on back compression.. To be effective/economical, does the yoshi actually need a power commander? Would the standand pipe fix my issues?

Has anyone else had these dilemas? and what should i do??????

I've had 2 aftermarket cans on my 12R ( a Yoshi and a ..geez I forget the name of the other)
however
both droned ..just a flat fart crappy sound
and yeah both were at a funny angle (they didnt follow the stock cans position)
dunno about fuelling as the bike went ok

but as it sounded shite (and I couldnt carry a pillion)
I sold both and am back on the std Titanium can

Thanks Smitty! i'm glad someone else has faced this dilemma as well!

Having never actually ridden with the standard on....
Would you say it's not as droning(nee loud) now when cruising?

Supa - the sooty look is a result of unleaded fuel, not running rich or anything like that.

Just fitting that bolt-on Yoshi, should not require a PCIII. You might be able to source a small 'spud' that bolts into the end of the Yoshi pipe, which will help reduce the noise. These are just a tube with a fitting, which bolt straight down into the end of the pipe. It may also help to have the muffler re-packed ? These mufflers are just a straight-through 'absorption' style muffler, and the exhaust packing needs to be packed tight to keep the noise down.

I would not go back to the stock Ti pipe on my 12, as I found it way too quiet and almost had a couple of prangs in the first weeks of ownership due to cars simply not hearing the bike. No such problems since fitting the RS-3....and subsequently a Muzzy pipe....

Thanks for the insight Gos.... Its just been a thought on my mind regarding fuielling and i love that i can ask seemingly stupid questions here :)

I guess i am just a sook... (and actually care about the boss's hearing) so if it causes prangs... so be it...... on distance rides i'm sure my ears will forgive me! :)

Thank you both :o)

Earplugs, first problem solved. ;)

As for the second, I have seen first hand how much room you have under the pillion seats of those things esp once the liner is removed. :) can't see Ny reason you need the panniers, I reakon you could pack enough stuff for a week away under there. They should nickname those things mary poppins instead of the barge. :)

I prefer the stock quiet system myself. getting old and shite.... I have a 10 for loud duties

either full system / stock filter and pc3 or dont worry about it IMO as the middle ground isnt worth it, a few small geegees makes no difference with this bike untill you meet another 12. and we are talking 10hp without the PC and dyno
I can tell you with my 2 x 12's the stock bike has better crisp response by far, the other has been messed with in ways by previous owner and I am still trying to understand why, but it will happen in time. ;)

the actual noise level of the Yoshi never worried me (it was loud but hey I wear earplugs on long runs)
but out on the highway/freeway (like to PI) this low flat farty droan(that did not sound particularly sporty or nice)
just got to me...constant throttle is where it happens and it was not pleasant with the Yoshi

Having just replaced my yoshi bolt on with stock, and then straight after with a full tsukigi, I can tell you that the full tsukigi is far closer to stock noise levels than the yoshi ever was. In fact I am fairly certain she'd pass a 98dB noise test with fresh packing.

The yoshi droned bad at highway cruise, and the packing was still fresh when I replaced it. It was so bad that I felt the need to pull the clutch in to cruise past the cops. No such thing on the tsukigi system so far.

Well for me i came from a V-twin 650 with a 200cm long carbon straight thru pipe, that was up there with Harley Davidson loud (it did sound good though).

My full Yoshi System is very subtle when cruising but open up the throttle and it gets ALOT noisier best of both worlds.

Couple of Guys i ride with wear ear plugs seems to help them.

wrong methodology......
a backwards grope is allowed in these circumstances

Yep, i like the grope method!!!
Loud pipes, save lives. well thats what i saw on sticker on sat.
to much noise is not good, just loud enough for tin boxes to hear u coming i suppose.
I dont wear ear plugs, on road or track, they annoy me.
But having said that my zx7r is loud, as in loud, not my choise, pipe was on it when i bought it.

I think the Yoshi droning issue is some sort of resonance problem with the construction, perhaps in combination with the stock headers? *shrug* Also discovered the stupid Yoshi supplied bolts rust up pretty quickly, I actually snapped one removing it, and the thing weighs a tonne, doubt it's much lighter than stock. Pretty disappointing all round, but for a shade over $200 USD brand new what do you expect?

The 9R I had previously with full Akrapovic was relatively quiet at idle and highway, and so is the full system I have on the 12 now. No extra baffle required on either system.

Most full systems have a lower exit than the bolt-on yosh too.
