Hi all,

Was wondering if anyone has some tips on products to get chain lube and brake dust off wheels and brakes. At the moment it is a tedious job that I dread doing with some 'grease off' wipes I got from super cheap.

Wet a clean rag with kero for the wheels...works a treat
Wouldnt use it on the brake disc though

$2 export degreasor cans will do the job, thats how i do it anyway. i.e spray it on wash it off with hose and spray the chain with oil, only takes 5 minutes from start to finish.

its safe on paint and alloy etc. Just be carefull not to get much on your tyres. the 1st few corners can be a tad slippery.


after you have cleaned it, you can spray the wheels with silicone spray. This makes the next lot of chain lube/brake dust wipe off easier. But once again, dont get much on your tyres, can be slippery also.

petrol for rims and discs, then brake cleaner to remove petrol residue from disc then wash the rims etc.

How are you getting chain lube near the disc anyway?

CT18 truck wash works a treat (watered down) spray on & use a paint brush to clean then hose off
Another one is white spirits (get from bunnings) you can use it on paintwork with no fear & it is what the pros use to get road tar off paintwork

spot on. some stubborn stains will need a rub with a rag.

Personally I wouldn't use the cheap spray degreaser.....most contain contain solvents which is why they work so quick.... not so good for paintwork it will dull after time & it can penetrate you o rings on the chain should you get it on there.

Prepsol to help with removal of grease on your rim?

Its supposed to be a grease and wax remover.

I've only ever used Prepsol to clean the grease, lube, dirt, brake dust etc etc off my rims.

Prepsol is a wax and grease remover and is safe to also use on your tyres as well.

I have also always used prepsol to get the wax coating off a new set of tyres by pouring a heap of it on to a rag and then holding the rag against the tyre while I spin it. I wouldn't use anything else on or near my tyres.

If you need to clean the brake dust off the calipers use a brake cleaner, but be careful not to get it on your tyres or other paintwork, but you can also use prepsol on a rag if you don't have any brake clean.

Thanks Leanne, i find it hard to scrub in new tyres in winter.. Great tip

Thanks people think I will give the prepsol a try. Leanna sold i pretty well

Another one for prepsol here, if they are really covered in shit.. But if you regulary clean em and dont let it build up massively, i find that mr sheen works the titts, and gives it a nice aftershine on the rims
