Help me come towards the light.

So I'm tired of being a Honda owner. So much that it has been out of rego near 3 months and I don't even look at it anymore. It has been a good bike, but it won't carry luggage AND a passenger, and that's what I wanted it for. Rather than spend much dollars on a you beaut rear shock I'll probably just sell it.
I want another Kwaka cause I'm missing the love. And I can't afford the 1400GTR that I dream of. Air .... neeway, I found a neglected 1996 9r with a dead engine. Had a hole in a piston and the motor has been dismantled and then the job abandoned. Apart from the dud piston, clutch lever and a few nuts and bolts it is complete - though I would still want to dismantle it to make sure. It has an aftermarket exhaust - Scorpion or something - and will need the usual Total Rebuild for which I have become semi famous.
The guy wants a grand. I've been offering him really silly money, like 2 fiddy

and he says he'll give it me for $800 - otherwise he is going to wreck it.
Should I? And does he still want too much? Another red Kawasaki in the shed will be good for the soul, but how much will it hurt HM's credit card?

For that price what could you lose?
How many kms etc?

Kms are irrelevant. Its the same guy who sold me a ZZR600 with 36k and a service book that said 49.
The rego lapsed 3 years ago and it comes up clear on a wovr check. So I can blame Jonno if I buy it and spend 5 grand fixing it?

Spent less than $1k Exc Rego/ins on a GPZ900r that had not run in 5 years.
Now registered and needs a jet kit to fix up some mid range flat spots but thats it. (for now

The engine is a throw away .

Parts cost for a rebuild will be $$$ and how on earth did it hole a piston in the first place ? Something is way wrong .
$1200 ex sydney , ?? freight ?? Looking like 2.5 grand plus how are the tyres ? chain ? etc etc .
Shoulda bought Jonno's tart .
or better still ..................................

I don't want a ride away. That's part of what went wrong with the Honda. Both the GPX and the ZZR were projects that I bonded with because they had part of me in them. Mostly broken fingernails.
Even HM's 1100 was a labour of love. Last time I rode that I rediscovered the exhilaration that the CBR doesn't generate.

I could have loosened one header pipe flange, put the old fuel pump back in and gumbed up the carbs, that would make it interesting for ya

MotoGP isn't too far away, you shouldn't have too much trouble getting a motor from Syd to PI for free ... Just saying

Ok, I'm convinced. HM still thinks its too much - but only because we know Mr Smith* only paid $300 for it. I'll work on him.
