Hi,
Was wondering if anyone is into dogs. I have a 10 week old Amstaff puppy and was wondering if it is too early to feed him chicken necks. I've given to him once but cut them up into pieces first. Has anyone got some info on this for me?

Hang off on the chicken necks/carcasses until 12 months. His digestive system is still developing.
Dry puppy food wetted down - dash of gravy adds flavour.
He may have troubles passing fresh chicken bones.
At 10 weeks most dogs are just off the teet and getting used to solids.

I got a rotty, feed it the supacoat puppy, gives a shiny coat, also the small pellets make it easy to chew and digest.
now 8 years on and stilll loves the stuff! enjoy the new addition, mans best friend is sooooo true.

Sorry to disagree with the others, however in my experience chicken necks are perfectly ok for a 10 week old Amstaff! Not only are they perfectly OK, but they are a fantastic thing for them to eat. I have brought up over 20 puppies in my lifetime, lots initially on the farm and then, pets at home including my namesake Strika the Cocker Spaniel and just recently my Hungarian Vizsla Ozkar. ALL of them have had chicken necks from the age of about 6 or 7 weeks of age. The breeder was giving Ozkar and the whole litter chicken necks at 6 weeks . We fed him lots of them from when we got him home at 8 weeks and still do.

If the pup is a scoffer, then yeah, chop them up into little bits, but if he or she is happy to chew, then leave them whole. I find if you feed them after they have had a meal, they tend not to scoff them as fast and take more time to chew them. But you judge your puppy and work out what he or she works better with. Mine have all had them whole from the get go.

As for the dry food. Glen put me onto a product which works well. It's not cheap, you cannot buy it in supermarkets, but if you want a food which is very obviously good for them, then Royal Canin Maxi Junior should be considered. I pay about $100 for a big 13 or 15 kg bag of it which lasts about a month with my 12 month old German Shorthaired Pointer and my part time 7 month old hungarian Vizsla being fed with it. I mix a table spoon of either beef, chicken, lamb or roo mince in with it, just for some fresh protien, but that's all they need.

The supermarket brands are OK in terms of nutrition, but there are some added benefits for the Royal Canin. One, is that after the puppy has been slowly converted over fully from whatever you are now feeding it, within about two weeks of being on the Royal Canin only, you will find that your dogs poo is firm and easy to clean up, as well as there will be less of it and it smells less. Also, as an added benefit, the dog farts are far less potent on the Royal Canin than any supermarket brand you will find.

I had Ozkar and Zsa Zsa at a party on Sat night, I had to put Ozkar outside, as he get's fed Pro-plan when he is at his mum's, and his farts are just rank!!! Honestly foul. Zsa Zsa now that she has been on the Royal Canin for some time, her farts are less smelly than mine. Ok, OK, so that's no great thing I agree, but they are way better than copping a wiff of Ozkar's, they are gut wrenching!!

Thanks Strika. Seems you are very well informed and have put it to pracice many times. Was worried about him choking on a neck ?? Have fed my 2 previous staffies necks but am always open to new ideas hence the question.

Perfectly natural to worry about a new puppy!!! Just watch what he does when you give him one. Make sure as I said, that he has had a feed frist and is not starving, as then he will wolf it down. Also, try and pick a time where he is fairly chilled out for his first one. An overly excited puppy can once again hoover it up. But being and Amstaff, they arn't a small dog, so it won't hurt if he hoover the odd one. He'll get the hang of them soon enough.

Glad to hear mate.

But for the Amstaff puppy, you can leave them on the puppy stuff up to about 18 months old.

Staffy diet, weet bix,pumkin carrotts,brocili,meat,grass,balls, small creatures and just about anything that is dead alive moving or not.This includes doors chairs lounge suites shoes socks leathers helmets. i would however wait a little longer for the bone factor

Mine also likes tomatoes, rockmelon, cucumber...AND the house. Yep, she's gnawed on the corner of our wooden house!

mine still likes steelcap boots,addias,nike cardboard boxes just about anything when he gets board as for the chicken necks no problems from 10 weeks and thats his staple diet with a small amount of dry food well until he gets board.

We've got an English Staffy (7 months old) and she eats the Royal Canin Maxi Junior mixed with something else ie Sardines, Egg, Chicken, Carrot, Mince etc.

She loves Chicken and she's had Chicken necks but our vet is not a fan of them for Staffy's. His view is that Staffy's inhale them without chewing and the small bones can get caught in ther gut. I guess the emphasis is on "can". By the same token they will chew a stick or whatever else is laying around and no doubt any of that "can" end up getting caught in their gut as well. We give her largish bones from the butcher and take them off her before she starts splintering the bits of bone up.

I figure if they were in the wild they'd be eating chickens and whatever else they could catch so I don't reckon it's a problem.

Your local butcher will cut bones in half for you so they can chew the marrow out when they're pups.

If you want to see something funny put a whole egg on the ground in front of them. They'll play with it a bit and then when it cracks they'll realise it's like a Kinder Surprise for dogs.

We started feeding ours chicken necks at about 12 weeks but he just kept hiding them lol. Eventually something stinks and you need to get rid of it.

He still does it with pigs ears. We obviously feed him well lol.
