Mass finishing of parts - Xtreme Fuel Systems.

Greetings assembled trolls.

Last weekend, while galivanting through Macquarie Pass down to the 'Gong - I then slipped up to Liverpool to catch up with Nigel - the man behind Xtreme Fuel Systems, and a new style of *blasting* parts.

This method does not use vapour pressure like water blasting, or soda blasting, or any type of blasting medium *under pressure*......

What it consists of, are thousands of small steel parts - like ball bearings but square - which sit and vibrate in a big rotating drum. Carbies - mostly your old-school automotive carbs and manifolds etc, are placed in the drum for a period, and come out looking almost polished and with 3 coats of clear !!!

No clear coating is applied - the parts just look like that. The method is referred to as *mass finishing* of parts.......

Nigel has done a few jobs for a mate of mine from Sydney, Garnett Cook. Garn is a wizard with old Zeds, and knows more about them than anyone I know. He also likes his bikes to look the part.......so here are some examples of the sort of finishes you can get with this style of mass finishing......

How is this set of cylinder heads and barrels from a H2 750/3 ??? mmmmmm nice !!!

I *think* this is an old Honda twin motor ??

You can see that this finishing process imparts a fantastic finish to all parts. The small metal bits which vibrate in the drum, against the part being worked on, impart a toughened surface skin to the parts, and this helps keep the part clean, no matter how often it is handled. The finish on these parts needs to be seen to be believed - it is that good.

I dropped off a big tub of brake drum housings and wheel hubs for Nigel to do over the next few weeks - when they are posted back down to me, I will put up some pictures.

The website can be found here - so if you have some parts which need to be cleaned, its worth giving this method a shot. The more parts you get done at once, the cheaper the whole exercise becomes.....

Worthy of remembering Gos...Can you put alloy wheels in it and is it costly?

you actually know a live human being who has something to do with this business???
wow...amazing! I have been wanting to buy some carby bits from these guys and in the past 12 months
have had no replies to my emails and phone messages. I presumed they did not want my business  or had died

ps...rota-tumbling is not new, we use it at work to give all our brass parts a nice new sheen (as it does not damage non-ferrous parts like brass or aluminium alloys)

cheers

Damn, that is shit hot. Got any indication of how much it'd cost to do a couple of things, say carbies or even a pair of rims? I'm just trying to get an idea is all.

I am not sure if he can do a full motorcycle wheel ? But will check ......

Minimum cost for 1 item is $77, but it gets much cheaper the more parts you give him. I am basically getting a big box of bits done for about $25 per item, so it works out quite cheap.

Nice. I was just trying to gauge the cost of doing this kind of stuff. Perhaps something for me to consider after I've blown money on the ski-season.

Just so i understand the process, If you were to get barrels/heads and all that done, would you be able to use cloth tape and block off the parts you don't want affected by the polishing? like the top/bottom of a barrel, wheel bearings /the top & ports of the head etc or would it have to be totally stripped down as well? I had a bit of a look on the net and wasn't able to get answers to questions like these.

I'm happy to throw doing some of this in the "too-hard" basket, but I like the idea of doing fork lowers and some other bits and pieces if i can't do anything else.

the guy who runs the show, knows what to tape up. He does all this as part of the price ( wheel hub bearing surfaces for example) - he has a great automotive background, so you don't have to worry about pre-taping anything.....
