Punctures - do I get too many?

I recently had a conversation with a friend where he said that I needed to stick to the main highways travelling to Dubbo on my own as I get a lot of punctures.

I thought this a bit odd, as I have only ever had four punctures which I didn't particularly think was a lot. My friend said that was four more than he had ever had.

So I have been thinking about this - in 7 years of riding motorcycles, and some 265,000km travelled in that time, I have had four punctures (two of which were on the Cursed GSXR where I had two within about two months), or one puncture for every 66,250km travelled.

Is this a lot? I'd be interested to hear about how often others get punctures.

Actually I guess I have technically only had three, seeing as I wasn't actually riding the Cursed Gixxer when it got the second puncture, I had swapped with someone else...

I've only had 1 so far.. was not long after I started riding, on way home after first trip to the pie, 50KMs from home.. rear tyre went pop.. not sure what the culprit was but the hole it left was nasty :S I ended up limping it home then got a new tyre on since it was pretty close to being due.. since then I carry half a tonne of shit with me so if I have any more issues I can fix it and be on my way again.. of course now that I do carry all the stuff no more punctures so far..

Considering the distance you travel that doesn't seem excessive.

I've had two in 35,000km, one of which was noticed as my mate who brought my GS500 rode it out the driveway

Never had on in 9 years. And that was doing roughly 220kms per day plus running around on weekends.

Funny that you bring this topic up. Was thinking the same. I have had two punctures in the last several months and only done 7k kms on these tyres. A nail and a rivet. So much crap left on the road these days. In previous years riding never had one.

It is 4 too many imo but acceptable for the distance travelled and why it is always hot when it happens?

I have had quite a few touring, lost count, and there is nuthin' like a hot day in bumfark nowhere fixing tyres. :x

Bastard of a bike that was. I managed 2 in say 50KM. Coming into Tintaldra then coming out of Tintaldra the very next morning.

I say the extreme lack of rubber may have intuced the intaldra episode on the Gixxer Mel

Yeah probably... actually the one with my ZX6R was the same - planned on replacing the tyre when I got home, was very low. Maybe I should start replacing tyres earlier...

I'm still claiming the Gixxer was cursed though! I used to wear my tyres down that much all the time...

The other one on the Gixxer was nuts - brand new Corsa III and a lump of wood the size of my thumb punched through it. Second worst sunburn I ever got that day too, took a couple of hours before I got any shade that day. The other one was a nail through the tyre of my 9 out on the Nullarbor somewhere but just kept pumping it up til I got to Ceduna and got it plugged.

So only two real ones, and two resulting from me being a tight arse and wanting to get 'full value' out of my tyres

Had 2 on my last rear tyre, and 1 on the one before that. Roughly 35000ks travelled.

All good :kuda:
